Workers contracted by the township were replacing the traffic signal located at Jaymor Road and Second Street Pike in Southampton Tuesday morning. 

The light at the intersection has been flashing yellow since Hurricane Sandy hit Southampton, over a week ago.

One of the crew members working at the scene told Patch the poll was damaged prior to the storm and was restabilized, but it could not withstand the heavy winds associated with the storm.  

"A while back the pole was struck by a truck and pulled off of its base," said Tom Pace, of Carr & Duff. "When the hurricane hit, the wind caught the signal and just ripped the pole all of the way out."

Pace said his crew came out Monday after the storm and removed the mast arm to stop it from swinging around. He said they are now busy replacing the pole.

After the pole is up it will be outfitted with a new controller and the power will be switched over. 

Barring any unforeseen problems, the light should be back in working order shortly.
