Doylestown’s Morgan Wasser was named the Grange Fair Queen during the opening ceremonies of the five-day event held Wednesday.

The soon-to-be senior at Central Bucks High School East was handed the crown by the 2011 Queen, Winter May Melson, and presented the title by Scott Dengler, co-director of the annual fair that runs through Sunday.

“They actually came and found me in the Grange barn to tell me that I had won,” said a smiling Wasser just outside the entertainment tent.

“They were jumping around and laughing, but it was in the Grange barn when I found out because I have animals that I show. It was so exciting, and I really wasn’t expecting it. It was a great, shocking surprise and I’m really looking forward to the upcoming year.”

Wasser, and all seven contestants up for the honor, each had to write an essay on what the fair means to the community, and then recite a speech about why people should come to the annual event.

“People should come to the Grange Fair because there is an educational opportunity for everybody,” explained Wasser. “There is a lot of agriculture that most kids don’t get to experience outside of the fair in the normal community."

She added that the fair also features great food, rides, livestock, horse shows, and many contests.

“The essay was about what the Grange Fair means to the community and I talked about how the fair is a great way to teach kids and parents alike about agriculture. It is a great place to come and meet other people you don’t normally get the chance to meet in the community outside of the fair.”

Wasser has been roaming the fairgrounds for as long as she can remember.

The teen has also been an active member of the 4-H for the past seven years.

“It (4-H) is really a family atmosphere,” she said. “You are around people that have the same interests as you, and I’m in the livestock clubs. We are like a family together, and it is a great opportunity for everybody.”

Besides being the fair’s ambassador on the local level, greeting people and offering a friendly smile, she will also be a representative at the state competition to be held in Hershey, Pa.

“I’ve been coming to the fair since I was little, for 17 years. Pretty much since I was born I’ve been coming here,” added Wasser.

“I love the livestock shows, and we work really hard all year long to get to here in August, so that is probably my favorite part of the fair. Also, it is just something that I look forward to coming to all year long.”

Morgan is the daughter of Ruth and David Wasser. She has two younger brothers, Aaron and Cameron.
