Garrett Reid Found with Steroids

Northampton County District Attorney John M. Morganelli reveals that vials found with Garrett Reid when he died were steroids.

Garrett Reid, the oldest son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, had a large amount of steroids in his room when he died of an accidental heroin overdose this summer.

Northampton County District Attorney John M. Morganelli said at a press conference Monday afternoon that Reid, 29, was in possession of vials that contained performance-enhancing steroids.

Morganelli said the vials contained four types of anabolic steroids that increase testosterone and build muscles. Reid was working with the Eagles' strength and conditioning team, but Morganelli could not determine whether Reid used the steroids personally or was supplying others.

"I have no evidence there was any distribution occurring," Morganelli said.

Reid died on Aug. 5 in his dorm at Philadelphia Eagles training camp at Lehigh University. At that time, Morganelli said, Reid was in possession of "a substantial amount of syringes and needles." A used syringe and spoon were also found, he said.

The drug paraphernalia discovered in a Reebok gym bag in Reid's apartment room at Lehigh University included:

  • 64 needles
  • 47 syringes
  • 19 vials of an unknown liquid (which turned out to be steroids.)

Reid struggled almost 10 years with drug addiction and drug dealing. He was helping at camp with players' strength training and conditioning.

Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek said that toxicology reports suggested "chronic use" of drugs.

I t is disgusting that the press has to reopen that wound publically at Christmas. This serves no godly purpose. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Bull. It's the news. Just because you don't like what it could mean for Reid's family or the team doesn't make it any less worthwhile for others to know -- especially because this was information provided at a PRESS conference.

Maybe the steroids were reason Trent Cole and Babin didnt have as good of seasons! But i agree, this should not be news as it serves no purpose being made public. The boy is dead and the family has suffered enough.

I disagree, I do believe this is worthy of an article. Its obviously unfortunate that Garrett is deceased, but he wasn't exactly a law abiding citizen and this detail leads to many questions about Eagles players potentially using PEDs.

Well i blame the team and his family for his death! How can you not know he would be back on drugs! Its pretty easy to know when someone that obvious and well known is messed up. And alot of them knew he was feLing with steroids so they should be fired or charged in his death. They should check the whole teM for steroids and find out what really happened. Thats too much drugs to be not noticed by anyone. Maybe they eliminated him because he was gonna rat them out and covered it up. Ps stop blaming the coach for losing games- blame the players who actually do the work on the field! Also ome last thing if they dont report the news even if its borring what are we gonna read everyday so stop complaining and get a life!

How can you blame a 29-year old's death on anybody else but himself? They were his choices. He is a grown man and knew that an overdose was not only possible, but likely. To many people in todays world want to blame others. At that point in his life, HE is the one that responsible for himself and no one else.

If the Eagles are using PED's, they aren't exactly helping them this season, now are they? This is just Morganelli's never-ending thirst for headlines and it's shameful stirring up salacious facts that by his own admission, will never lead to any criminal charges. May he find a lump of coal in his Christmas stocking this year, courtesy of the Reid family, who are in mourning.

I'm not sure why this article is being released now either. The death happened in August, so why is this coming out in December? The family has suffered enough

Why don't you shoot the messenger, Barbara? The article is being released now because the DA held a press conference TODAY. Sometimes toxicology reports take months to finish.

Concerned citizen- he was 29. Why blame the family? Should your parents be blamed for something you did when you were 29? And to say someone killed him is ridiculous. Maybe he was giving some players steroids and that is randomly tested by the NFL and those guys that chose to take the drug. Should be blame their parents too. Agree with others, blame falls on the 29 year old. As for reporting this stuff, maybe if the press covered more good things, more people will want to do more good things and feel better about themselves and this world.

Hey concerned citizen, blaming the team for Reid's death is like me blaming you for my low bank account. We all have to take responsibility for ourselves, especially when it comes to doing heroin. You know that OD is highly likely. And no you wouldn't automatically know when someone is on drugs. That's an old adage. Some people are very good at hiding things like that.

i put the blame on alot of people on his death. yes hes andult. yes he knew he could die from it. Did you see how much drugs he had on him. He was like a king pin dealer. Theres no way that those people didnt know whats going on. And the teams losing is propbaly cause they cut back on the steroids and their inside supplier is dead. how do you compare me and your bank account when you dont know how to save money? ANd you can tell a drug addict by their eyes and mannerisms unless yuou are knowling blind and dont care or get paid to keep quiet. This guy carried alot of drugs on him so that proves he was suppling to others even if they werent on the team. And it takes time to release details on deaths when they had to complete their investigations and look where the drugs came from. How does the family suffer enough, They dont have to worry about the stress of him being in trouble and it eliminates the bad press they get when hes arrested, Those people are rich and could care less about you or me. And A family and team should be blamed because if they cared they would have put him on street instead of letting him stay at training camp. Its all a conspiracy. Yes he is to blame for the most part but others are too.

Wow concerned. I hope u don't have any family members. I feel bad for them if any of them ever needs your help. Throw ur kid on the street because he's high? The bank account comment was a comparison to your moronic point of view on placing blame on others. U sound like one of those whacko conspiracy theorists. Yep u cracked the case if the losing eagles wide open. Andy Reid's son took all of their steroids away. It sounds like your too dumb to realize how dumb u are.

News is the news (whether pleasant or not) and updates should be reported. If you don't like the content of the article or the timing, please don't read it. To criticize news editors for doing their job is mis-directed anger.

I have just one question...... what's the difference between an accidental overdose and an overdose? I highly doubt he planned this or did he fall on the needle?? Let's just call it what it is ,an overdose! STOP sugarcoating it because of who he is....... the media is not helping the children of today by saying accidental! I'm sorry the family had to go through this but I don't think many people were surprised!

I have no issues with this being reported now. The media should report the news at the time it occurs. The media didn't schedule this press conference, the DA did. Whether they like it or not, the Reid family is in the public eye; that comes with the territory of being a in the NFL. Finding syringes, needles and vials of steroids in the dorm room of someone who is a member of the Eagles strength and conditioning staff is news people! This has not been reported previously. The fact that the occupant of that dorm room died from a heroine overdose is old news.

I have an issue with receiving this as a Patch Breaking News Alert on my phone three days after the shooting in CT. My kids were at school and my stomach was in a knot when I saw a breaking news alert. When I opened the breaking news alert and saw this, I thought "You have got to be kidding me!" I can't believe you sent this. I will be taking myself off of your Patch e-mail list and not receive any of your alerts from now on. To issue this as an alert that has absolutely no impact on my day, or anyone else's for that matter, was extremely poor judgment and made me lose a lot of respect for this online publication. Especially considering the timing. A lot of parents were on pins and needles dropping their kids off at school today. You gave me a huge scare for no valid reason. I was always a big proponent of the Patch. No more. You've greatly disappointed and disgusted me with your "breaking news alert" about something so trivial.

The Breaking News alert is voluntary. You can decide to not receive them at any time. If someone with such a sensitive mind as yours can't handle them I would suggest unclicking the option, for your own mental health.

Seriously? Some of the people making comments here are ridiculous.

My opinion is that it was not worthy of a breaking news alert and you've lost a subscriber because of it. In the past, I've received breaking news alerts about reported crimes: when Hymie's in Merion was robbed at gunpoint and when there was a stabbing two blocks from my house. I actually go to Hymie's and I run outside past the location where the stabbing took place. It is true that I've gotten a few about traffic jams and accidents in my area...Ardmore, Merion Wynnewood, and those have been helpful. I fail to see how a news conference about Andy Reid's son months after he died qualifies as a breaking news alert like the others I've received. Look, you are the Patch. Cover local community things. That's your appeal. I don't care to get breaking news alerts about the NFL. If I did, I would subscribe to ESPN or one of the SEVERAL other available options for sports news. But thanks for telling me to "get a grip and grow up." That was a significantly helpful and intelligent response, much like the breaking news alert about Andy Reid's son.

Last but not least, Rosemary, news is news, that is true...but if you send insignificant Breaking News Alerts, it will end up like the boy who cried wolf. Eventually, it loses it's significance and no one pays attention. Or, people simply unsubscribe because there is no value in having it b/c it doesn't make their lives any more convenient...just another e-mailed item to delete.

Why did I get it if I subscribe to Ardmore, Merion and Wynnewood Breaking News Alerts? Maybe you need to fix that. Even if it is in Bethlehem, this is still not typically the same as the other alerts I have gotten in the past. Based on your remarks, which are quite impolite, I can't tell if you really want to make the site better or more subscriber-friendly. I think you are supposed to foster healthy debate. Instead you make personal remarks & conjecture about people, like myself, who are airing valid frustrations about your site. Not really a recipe for maintaining readership or encouraging people to comment.

It's not revelant news . He died in august and nobody cared the next day . And you know what ? Nobody cares now ! You can tell its a slow news day . Just like the media in Conn. They can't leave the families and the town alone to grieve. What purpose does this new information in his sons death serve ? Absolutely none ! And this isn't directed at just the patch , but to all media .

Now that I think about it and what some people mentioned in the posts, the team have been down since his death. I mean the way they have been playing since makes you wonder and think about how they were playing before. Now they just can't get it right. It bothers me to that Andy has Vick at third quarterback and not starting as he started. Don't get me wrong Foles is good for back-up right now. He is turning the ball over just as bad and yes he won a game but really Andy.

I cannot understand why this is even being debated. Of course it is news. In a football crazy town like Philadelphia where the coach's son was working with the strength and conditioning coach is found with steroids? This is major news given the volume of syringes and the liquid turning out to be steroids. Did he give them to the players? Was he dealing steroids? Either way you better believe the NFL Security team will think it is news worthy.

Not to mention that a 29 year old son of a pro football coach lost his life to drugs. Now there he was found with steroids on his person. That is as tragic a story as it gets. If his death helps one young person reconsider their drug use or turns them away from steroids than it certainly is news worth printing.

Good job Patch for printing all the news without a bias. That is what reporting is all about!

Compared to the shooting in newtown this story is very insignificant. But in general it is an interesting story that brings up many issues and was a big news in august. So keep up the good work patch but dont harshly judge people that are emotionally upset because of the shooting in newtown.

All this fighting in the comments section about the reporting is crazy. If you don't like something don't read it or watch it, it's that simple! Garrett made some very bad life choices and it should be public so our kids hopefully will learn something from this. It's not a good idea, no matter who you are or who your parents are, to think you are above the law and you are above the statistics. Do I feel sorry for this parents, yes very much, but this is news and they are public figures. It should be reported as such, which it was.

Thanks to others for their comments. Everyone is entitled to their opinions on whether or not the Garret Reid steroid story is worthy of an e-mail alert. I would be happy to send you a list of the types of local stories that I, as a reader, would be interested in knowing about via breaking news alerts. Because of the structure of your replies, I don't know if you'd really want it. There is a big difference between Hymies being robbed at gunpoint and the Garret Reid story from yesterday. I could have read yesterday's story this morning when I typically read The Patch. Hymies is less than two miles from my house. That is an area I avoided when I received the alert. The same with the stabbing. It was directly beneficial to me and others in my community at the time we received it. A follow up on that story months after it was first reported in a different county would probably not be helpful to anyone in my opinion. My e-mail inbox is continually bombarded with insignificant emails as it is. I try to unsubscribe from as many as possible. I am disappointed to add The Patch to the list. If the editor of my particular Patch had more control over the breaking news alerts sent to her Patch's readers, I'd consider re-subscribing. It appears from this feed that the writers and editors disagree about what should be a breaking news alert. I hope this debate improves the site.

Thanks for your feedback, Lori. Our Local Editors do have the authority to send out news alerts on stories specific to your community such as the armed robbery you mention! Another type of alert our readers seem to appreciate is anything significant on traffic accidents or detours - unexpected problems that could seriously disrupt your day. Across eastern Pa., we have more than 40 Patch editors and managers so there will be disagreement among us at times but we'll use this opportunity to improve communication and work more closely together on these decisions. I read the patch quite often. My suggestion for the patch writers are guidelines for the phrase "breaking news". The other day the breaking news was that a local high school choir was beat out by another local high school choir. That is in no way breaking news. It's just like the rest of the media. It's a ploy to get you to click on the link so they can have more viewers and better ratings.
