Morning After: Hangover Cures

Did you celebrate the new year a bit too much last night?

The best way to avoid a hangover is not to drink. Other ways to try avoid a hangover are to eat before drinking and to drink plenty of water while drinking alcohol to counteract the dehydrating effects of booze.

But the morning after, that’s a water (or alcohol) under the bridge. You can’t turn back time.

To help get rid of that hangover WebMD recommends getting more sleep and taking two Aspirin.

Having some water and a snack should help, according to the Mayo Clinic, which agrees on the sleep and Aspirin suggestion.

The first sentence of this article acknowledges that not drinking is the best way to avoid illness associated with alcohol use. But by equating drinking with celebration, as in the headline question, this article adds to the social pressure to drink. It implies that to cut out drinking you have to cut out celebration. And especially in the immature adolescent mind that message makes not drinking a much harder choice.

Wow you're right. My plan all along was to skip out on consuming anything this holiday season, but this headline in this publication in this story was so subliminally seductive that I wound up in the gutter (after caving to the social pressure to drink). I hope someone cracks down on these perverse writers with their agendas before this town bellies up I'm its own headline-liquor-induced vomit. /sarcasm

Acetaminophen is very harmful to the liver, especially if mixed with alcohol. Avoid it and any products containing it (there are many) as a hangover cure.

"...according to the Mayo Clinic, which agrees on the sleep suggestion, but suggests acetaminophen (like Tylenol) over Aspirin."

They are not suggesting acetaminophen but are in fact saying to avoid it.

"And if you sometimes drink alcohol to excess, acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) can cause severe liver damage even in doses previously thought to be safe." -MayoClinic

there should be a correction to this article. Do not take "acetaminophen (like Tylenol) over Aspirin". Acetaminophen can cause liver damage if taken. The Mayo Clinic website says this: "And if you sometimes drink alcohol to excess, acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) can cause severe liver damage even in doses previously thought to be safe." Please make this correction to your article as this is potential harmful if taken.

Don't hold your breath waiting for that correction, Lara. This article is so wrong in many ways that it definitely falls into the "all the news fun to print" category. Lucy Bennett can do better then repeating old folk tales and misquoting her sources.

I find continuing to drink is the best way to get rid of a hangover.
