NRA Pledges 'Meaningful Contributions' in Wake of School Shooting

The National Rifle Association will hold a "major" news conference Friday as it promises to help make sure a tragedy like the mass murders at Sandy Hook Elementary never happens again.

The National Rifle Association issued this statement Tuesday in response to the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.:

"The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.

"Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.

"The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.

"The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday, December 21.

"Details will be released to the media at the appropriate time."

Also on Tuesday, Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods announced they will suspend sales of some modern sport rifles in their inventory.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett on Tuesday warned against a rush to pass new gun laws, according to this Morning Call report.

The NRA is no more responsible for an event like CT, than AAA is responsible for a multiple-car fatal crash.

No One is saying the NRA is responsible. There's no problem with people owning guns for protection and hunting. There's no need to have automatic weapons with high capacity magazines except for police and military!

The only purpose for automatic weapons is for killing people! Let's wake up America

The other part of this problem is mental illness and its treatment! Mental illiness still carries a stigma and many families are struggling with getting their loved ones proper treatment and medications. Hospitals street patients when their insurance runs out and you can't forcibly make someone take their meds or go into treatment. Appointments are mental health clinics take months and getting the right treatment can be or assistance can be a nightmare.
We need to improve the care of the mentally ill.
