Philadelphia Eagles Don't Deserve This Victory

Philadelphia Eagles open season with rough outing against Cleveland Browns.

Too many turnovers. Too many penalties. Too many mistakes.

Too bad.

The Philadelphia Eagles shouldn't be losing football games to the Cleveland Browns. And they almost did. After losing the lead, the Birds rallied with a little over a minute to pull out a 17-16 victory.

A win is a win. But this should have been a blowout.

The Birds are supposed to be an elite Super Bowl contending team while the Brownies are supposed to be the doormat of the National Football League.

That's why they play the game.

And the game played by the Philadelphia Eagles against the Browns Sunday was one of frustration and disappointment.

While the Birds produced nearly 500 yards of offense, the O committed five turnovers, including four interceptions by a rusty Michael Vick.

Some of his throws were inexcusable. A fifth was dropped in the end zone, which would have sealed the game.

It looked like the same old Eagles.

You can't pin this one on defensive coordinator Juan Castillo and the defense. They held the Brownies to three field goals and made four interceptions, including two by corner Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and two by Kurt Coleman.

The defensive line looked like a force with lots of pressure. The return of defensive end Jason Babin certainly turned up the heat.

And middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans showed a lot more gusto than during the pre-season. The other linebackers and the safeties played well, too.

A late Coleman INT put the game in the win column for the Birds.

But Vick struggled.

He didn't have a pre-season. And it showed. But at least Vick made it through a football game without an injury. That says a lot.

Still, there were some highlights:

Vick sparkled on a long throw to Jeremy Maclin and tossed him a bullet in the end zone.

Maclin had a solid game. DeSean Jackson got around 75 receiving yards.

And Shady McCoy went over 100 years even though Coach Andy Reid forgot about the running game for a little while in the second half.

A win is a win.

Hopefully, Vick can shake off the rust. The Birds next play a tough Baltimore Ravens, a top playoff contender.

This game shouldn't have been this close. Vick isn't a rookie; he needs to play to a higher level.

The Birds got lucky. Luck isn't enough to save this season.

What happenned to the "NEW ANDY REID"?? SOS
I felt like Randy Quaid in Major League, screaming at Dawg Vick.
Next week against Ray Lewis, call the Coroner for Vick. His last game of the year.

While a win is a win it was more of the same old same old for the Eagles. Once again, Andy Reid has a game plan predicated on the pass and a horrible pass-run ratio. You would think with starting Vick who only took 12 snaps in the preseason that the game plan would use McCoy more; especially since he was effective early.

Same old Eagles. Turnovers, bad play calling, no discipline, If the line blocked like that against the Browns I expect Vick to be knocked out of the game midway through the 2nd quarter against a significantly better Ravens defense.

I was at huge game and it was worse than described. Add poor play calling to poor performance with exceptions as noted. The dawgs almost killed Vick, not the other way around. Fun being at the stadium, but a total disappointment. And against the BROWNS???

Yes Foles should be their #1 QB, He is more mature and proved in the preseason, that his passing and overall handling of the "O" was gr8!!!

This looked like the same old pathetic Philadelphia Eagles team under Andy Reid. Way too many mistakes by the offense.. Defense, however, did OK. I really think Andy should consider taking Vick out and using either of his backups. Perhaps the score would have been much higher and there would have been much fewer incompletes or turnovers. Eagles will have to play a whole lot better next Sunday, and from hereon in if they are to be this year's Super Bowl contenders.

The Eagles traditionally play down to the level of their opponent. Their performance should not have been a surprise to anyone.

If the Browns had any offence at all the blow out would have been against the Eagles! Tell me why Colt McCoy wasn't in there by the third quarter? Actually, both teams should have had backups in after halftime the way the starters performed.

as long as you have the reid & vick show their superbowl dreams will never happen.
a lot of other teams are improving and the Eagles are the same.13 years under the same coach but no superbowl victory.I'm hoping for a 8 & 8 season, cause lurie said that will be unacceptable.
what's the line on when vick will get injured and miss the rest of the season.

Why should this have been a blowout? Is this based on the game they played in the pre-season?? It is comments like these that get the Eagles and their fans in hot water.

As far as the game went, I agree it should have been a better performance. But it wasn't. There is now film on what they did wrong, what they did right and now need to do their homework and prepare for next week.

Lurie had a chance to get rid of Reid at the end of last season and chose to take the easy way out and kept him. Reid has continued to be the same lack luster, poor decision maker he has always been. This will be another mediocre season, but as long as people keep paying to see this team nothing will change.

Not a good headline. They won so they deserve it. The Lansdale Patch better watch their words around here or people will start removing them. Lansdale bleeds green as much as Philly bleeds green. Give Vick a chance to get back into the swing of things. He's a good QB and if he doesn't turn it around we've got one hell of a back up.

People crack me up...If they had lost people would be counting them out for the rest of the season and it is only the first game. They win and people still seem to have no faith in the team. Yes, Vick looked rusty and I would have liked to have seen Foles put in but we all know that Reid was not going to do that. The defense did their job and held the Browns. They won the game, that is all that matters!!! I for one would rather be 1-0 than 0-1...Go Eagles!

A few observations:

1) A win is a win, no matter how ugly. The Eagles played well enough to win, as is reflected by the final score.

2) Regarding penalties, there were at least three or four tick-tack holding calls against the Eagles that negated runs by McCoy and ended drives. Real refs would never call those penalties, especially when they occur on the other side of the field and away from the play (Maclin "holding", anyone?).

You can call holding on every play in the NFL, but professional refs know when to let things slide and when to toss the flag. The replacement refs have obviously not learned that lesson.

3) Vick was rusty, period. Lots of people are blaming the o-line, but outside of a few bad plays, Vick was simply holding onto the ball too long. Watch his feet. During his 3-5-7 step drops, he was planting his feet, but was slow on his reads. He then got happy feet, which more than likely lead to a few of the interceptions.

On the bright side, Vick is a pro, and considering he only took 12 snaps in the preseason, he didn't look THAT bad. With a full game under his belt, expect him to rebound next week.

4) The defense looked GREAT! They played the pass well, and they held a good running back to nearly two yards per carry.

5) If you look at Cleveland's roster, from coaches to players, there are many former Eagles. They know Reid's system. They know his tendencies, and they have familiarity with many of the players on the Philadelphia squad.

the Eagles don't deserve this victory? They played just as well (or bad) as the Browns and the Eagles won. What do you think they're going to do...give it back? No matter how good or how bad they play each week, if they win, its a win whether by 1 point or a hundred.

If you all can do such a better job why are you sitting at the other end of the screen. Back-up QB did great but don't let that fool you either. 1960...people who are 52 years old have never seen a championship. People who are in their 60's vaguely remember. Why anyone invests their hopes and dreams in this franchise is beyond me? We should not have to talk about football championships in terms of centuries in this city. Its pathetic.

Umm...call me crazy but winning a championship is supposed to be the goal right? I think waiting 52 years and still filling a stadium every Sunday without a championship makes us all pretty good fans. We reserve the right to complain after watching our division rivals the Giants win 4 super bowls, the Cowboys have won 5 and the Redskins have won 3 in that same time span. The eagles...a huge goose egg. So yeah...I love my hometown team but I can be critical too. They deserve criticism.

You can boil it down to this ... Yes, it was a butt ugly win. But it looks like a solid W in the standings nonetheless. As good as the defense looked against an admittedly weak offense, the Eagles could have killed the Browns by simply limiting the amazing number of mistakes they made. The real key as the season unfolds will be whether the offense can hold it together enough to give the defense a chance to win a few more games.

And let's not forget those replacement refs ... Well, maybe we should forget them.

probally one of the ulgiest wins we ever had. just think if were already doing this bad just think how bad we will be if Vick gets injured, after that we will be in HUGE trouble, it still shocks me that some people beleive that the eagles have a chance of making it to the supper bowl, we need to rethink our stragdies and call better plays if we even want a chance at the playoffs, as of now i dont think we have a chance. looks like one bad season after another. one last thing dont get all hyped up that we were 4-0 in the pre season tht just means bad luck to some people ( remember the lions in 2008 ). looks like we canolny hope for the best.

The Eagles will NEVER win the Super Bowl with Mike Vick at QB and Andy as head coach. Period. Vick is a duck and chuck QB who can't read a defense pre snap nor find secondary receivers unless he is running for his life. Reid refuses to run the ball and has proven to be below average when it comes to in game adjustments and time management. These are not opinions. These are facts. Our best chance will come in 2013 when Foles is the QB and a new coach (maybe Jon Gruden) is on the sidelines. Until then, look for more of the same...

That said, I like them this week. Vegas making them 3 point favorites after what happened last week tells me to take the Birds as it looks way too easy to take the Ravens +3.

Sorry Eric but you'll have to get rid of your Con-Vick jersey after this season because he will not be the Eagles QB in 2013. Even if he has a few good games, including this week, in the end the guy is not a winner. Name the last 5'10 duck and chuck QB that won the Super Bowl? Championships are won by accurate pocket passers: Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Drew Brees, Arron Rodgers (he scrambles but looks to throw first). Not guys who sack themselves by running to the edges every time there is pressure.
