The stock market closed at 7949 the day Obama took office. Today: 13328. Almost 70%! Yes....things are horrible...the corporations are not making any money so they won't hire so we need to give them more.
Medicare is already privatized....it's called Medicare Advantage and good luck finding a doctor who accepts it because the insurance companies delay or deny claims...doctors have mortgage payments to make too and are under no obligation to accept MA. ..so how does it create competition and benefit seniors if doctors don't want to accept it...its why Obamacare is trying to phase it out but the GOP acts as if seniors don't already have a choice between government or private Medicare....but don't take my word for it...don't take msnbc or fox news' word for it...check your facts before you jump on the Bain/Voucher bandwagon.

Ryan felt empty, while V. Pres. Biden gave a soild feeling.

Remember for any election: it's easier to attack the incumbent, because they've been there performing. Other candidates can criticize, but weren't in the incumbent's shoes. Ryan and Romney are REALLY full of lies. Presidentially, I've found 1 lie on the other side, and there may be more, however, the Republicans and they're mega-pac, etc, supporters are outright liars & criminals. (Here in PA, kicked disabled people off of meager public assistance checks, but spent millions of taxpayer dollars - millions - to get this voter I. D. think, as they did w/ Fla. funds !

I agree!!! Facts DO matter!!! Facial expressions and demeanor trump sound, accurate facts!! President Obama also presented accurate facts despite his refusal to join in with Gov. Romney's sarcasm and constanat interruption etc...I do not support the Romney/Ryan ticket and it has NOTHING to do with their presentation! This country needs to follow the issues accurately and educate themselves so they do not get drawn in to all that superficial nonsense regarding demeanor, expression etc!! Joe Biden won. I will never understand people who vote against their best interest. The extreme right has taken over the republican party. You are being lead to your own enslavement and your blind to seeing it. In one breath your yelling less government and the next your taking rights away from the American people. You criticized the President in being to reserved in the last Presidential debate and then in the Vice Presidential debate you saying Joe was too aggressive. Joe is being Joe. He is not a shapeshifter or a sales man like Mitt and Paul. I love Pennsylvania citizens we are straight forward. We don't tell you what you want to hear, we tell you like it is. Paul Ryan never gave a straight answer on anything. Joe corrected him on many of the subject including telling Paul and the moderator You are wrong,I was there at the table (literally at the table) when it happened. We might think we know what is going on in the White House but these are the people who are there working in our best interest. Vote Obama! If you vote Mitt you will lose funding for birth control (but it's ok to pay for Viagra). They will cut the funding for college funds. Your medicare will be changed to a voucher system and your out of luck if you can't make up the difference. All so they can keep the loop holes and tax cuts for the rich. We might not have the recovery as fast as we want but it is making a slow steady progress and in the end we will all recover not just the rich. VOTE

"The extreme right....and the next your taking rights away from the American people." What rights are the extreme right taking away? Be specific as to "rights."

"I love Pennsylvania citizens we are straight forward. We don't tell you what you want to hear, we tell you like it is." Seriously? Are you the spokesperson for Pennsylvanians?

"Paul Ryan never gave a straight answer on anything. " Never? Please prove that by explaining every statement he made and what the correction should be.

Remember that Biden is a long time politician and should have enough wisdom to know how to control his outward appearance. Can you imagine if he is dealing with foreign diplomats this way? Of course a persons facial expressions matter. It is called body language and it certainly does matter. Ask any teacher if their student's body language matters when they are answering a question. I would expect his reactions if he were a teenager or very young politician, but obviously he is trying to distract and hope that the weakminded just see his smirk and follow suit. There is no way that this man should still be in politics. He is a bad joke and needs to get a job elsewhere.

SNL will not find anything funny about this except Paul Ryan's ears. They may make fun of it after the election, when Obama is defeated and has failed his socialist friends. C'mon Biden has given us so many laughs after over the years. Here's just a few:

- On Aug. 14, 2012, Vice President Joe Biden tells a Virginia crowd, Romney's plan would "put y'all back in chains."
-- On April 26, 2012, Biden tried to riff on President Theodore Roosevelt's famous quote “Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far," by saying, "I promise you, the president has a big stick. I promise you."
-- On Aug. 1, 2011, as a follow up to Democratic Rep. Mike Doyle suggesting that dealing with Tea Party and fiscal conservatives was like negotiating with terrorists, Biden reportedly piled on by saying, “They have acted like terrorists.”
-- On June 26, 2010, Biden called the manager of a custard shop outside of Milwaukee a "smartass" after the man asked him to lower taxes. Biden made the comment after the Kopp’s Frozen Custard shop manager told him that his dessert would be on the house if he lowered taxes. "Why don’t you say something nice instead of being a smartass all the time?" Biden said a few minutes later.
-- On July 16, 2009, an open microphone caught Biden saying, "This is a big f---ing deal" to President Obama during a Washington signing ceremony for the president's health care law.

@Jamie- focusing on the candadites' expression is behavior one would expect from those in high school. Discuss the substance of the debate. Ryan was short on answers. There's no way around that. All he could say was "we would do it differently" without giving specifics on how. The deficit, taxes, Iran, Syria, defense...the only thing he was upfront about was abortion. How could Ryan have answered any question with "substance" when Martha constantly cut him off mid statement and threw another question at him? It was obvious that she didn't want Ryan to make his point and explain the rationale behind it. Martha- Biden's BFF? No doubt in my mind. I always liked Biden but he came off last night as Bobo the clown boy! The condescending "my friend" used repeatedly when addressing Ryan was ignorant and dismissive. Hopefully this is not the Biden we send to represent the USA with foreign dignitaries; or perhaps it is. That might explain our ineffective foreign policy. I would hope that any individual representing the USA would be well-mannered and respectful of others even when they may not agree. Is that philosophy sophomoric? Shouldn't we expect a "presidential" demeanor from those who represent this country? I think we have had enough of the "Yo, Friend" for the last four years. Biden was so loud, obnoxious, and unfocused that it became difficult for me to focus on the point he was trying to make! I could not say either man was a clear winner on substance. However, Ryan was on the mark in allowing Biden to continue making a fool of himself.

Unemployment is inching under 8%, foreclosures are a 4 year low, the Dow is over 13,000 after falling to just over 6,500. The stimulus was specific, as was his jobs bill, as is the Affordable Care Act, he intends to let the Bush era tax cuts expire on those making over $250,000, he's planning on offering tax cuts to domestic manufacturing, he's been a supporter of expanding domestic energy production...that's just what comes to mind. what specifics have Romney/Ryan offered? what loopholes and deductions are they intending on doing away with? how do they plan on replacing the revenue lost from their 20% tax cut proposal?

Mitt Romney’s Plan for a Stronger Middle Class is a five-part proposal for turning around the economy and delivering more jobs and more take-home pay for American families.
Part one of Mitt’s plan is to achieve energy independence on this continent by 2020. America is blessed with extraordinary natural resources, and developing them will create millions of good jobs – not only in the energy industry, but also in industries like manufacturing that will benefit from more energy at lower prices. America’s economy will boom when the billions of dollars we send overseas for our oil are kept here at home instead.

Part two of the plan is trade that works for America. Mitt believes that trade can offer enormous opportunities for American businesses and workers, but only if they are given a level playing field on which they can compete and win. That is why he will work to open new markets for American goods and services, while also confronting nations like China that cheat on trade and steal American jobs.
Part three is to provide Americans with the skills to succeed through better public schools, better access to higher education, and better retraining programs that help to match unemployed workers with real-world job opportunities.

Part four is to cut the deficit, reducing the size of government and getting the national debt under control so that America remains a place where businesses want to open up shop and hire.

Finally, part five of Mitt’s plan is to champion small business. Small businesses are the engine of job creation in this country, but they will struggle to succeed if taxes and regulations are too burdensome or if a government in Washington does its best to stifle them. Mitt will pursue comprehensive tax reform that lowers tax rates for all Americans, and he will cut back on the red tape that drives up costs and discourages hiring.

Martha never allowed Ryan to make a point and explain it! She was a joke of a moderator! Biden was still lying about the "spontaneous" uprising in Benghazi and attempting to blame the Intelligence Service for the administration's failure to tell the truth. This administration has been nothing more than four years of "not my fault". They take responsibility for nothing - most of all their inadequacies.

@Reaganite- 5 bullet points are hardly a plan. They are more accurately described as goals that they've proposed out without offering specifics as to how they might accomplish those goals. A real plan has strategies and tactics attached to it that assess real obstacles and outline achievable outcomes.

And as for not talking about the specifics, it makes for boring soundbites.. If anyone really wants to know, the stuff has been there for months, they can find it. All the libtards are doing is trying to keep the conversation away from the results of Obama's four year curtain call. The Celebrity in Chief is wearing no clothes.

@Reaganite- i tried to read the whole plan, but i got an "access denied" page instead. Could be the older PC i'm on. Anywho, i disagree with your observation that specifics make for boring soundbites. there's plenty of time in a debate to begin outlining some aspects of their specific plan, especially when they are asked repeatedly as to how they intend to make up the loss in revenue from their proposed 20% tax cut. And if there is indeed info out there regarding those specifics, why isn't it being reported on anywhere?

It's very simple, we cut our taxes and kill your benefits. Foreign policy, igonore the fact that the President got of Iraq, has a clear plan to get out of Afghnaistan, and actually focused our reources on finding and killing Bin Laden. Instead, trust Romney/Ryan who clearly want to invade Iran and spend more money we don't have. Nothing fiscally conservative aboout these 2 clowns. The Vice Presidency is an appointed position, not an elected one. The fact that viable third party candidates for the Presidency are excluded rather than included in the Presidential debates, yet non-elected appointed politicians are given nationally televised airtime to debate anything is another sham on the American people. Nationally televised Presidential debates should include third-party candidates. They have a vision for America truly deserving to be heard by the people when so much is at stake during such a critical election. Don't be hookwinked again. Consider the views of Gary Johnson, Libertarian. Vote Libertarian this one election. Rather than dying for freedom, let's live for freedom.

Good Lord, I must have been watching a different debate than the other commenters. Joltin' Joe hit it out of the park, calling Romney/Ryan on their lies and fabrications, and providing details. The moderator pressed Ryan repeatedly for details, which he never provided. He kept mentioning how they were building a framework and that they would add to it later. As far as Romney's storied bipartisanship, the Massachusetts Dems tell a completely different story. Numbers don't lie. The math does not work on the Ryan plan. Of the six "independent" studies Ryan kept mentioning that backed up his numbers, 3 of them are blogs, and one was paid for by the Romney campaign.

And a final comment to Big Jon, I am not black, Mexican, or poor, and I know many informed, educated voters like me who will vote for Obama.

I started covering Joe Biden back in 1982 when I was a young political reporter in Delaware. He always struck me as a guy who genuinely cared about people. When I first arrived on Capitol Hill he went out of his way to welcome me when I saw him the in Senate subway from the Capitol bldg to the Senate office building. At his core, I think he's a decent guy.

I didn't recognize the guy who debated Paul Ryan last night. I don't know what that means (if anything) in terms of who won or who lost, but it was a striking contrast to the Joe Biden I covered for many years in Delaware and on Capitol Hill.

His reference to be being from Scranton (a narrative the Obama 08 campaign developed for him to help win in PA) is also in stark contrast to what we Delaware natives have always been told about him. Yes, he may have been born in Scranton but his family moved to Delaware before he attended high school, making the hardscrabble Scranton narrative just a little tough to swallow for the Delawareans who voted him into the Senate at age 29. Perhaps that's just the nature of being second banana on a presidential ticket, but it does raise questions for some about personal integrity and image. To be frank, I didn't like the Biden I watched last night but then again I didn't recognize him.

Why not investigate it? Maybe it has answers beyond the same old, really same old two-party tale told many times before. If the Republicans and Democratic parties had legitimate and just standards for even for themselves and most assuredly for their country, they would not be excluding and preventing other qualified voices from being aired and heard. They reveal themselves by standing in the way of true free speech. Of course, they could choose the honorable path, and stop blocking other visions and voices for America's future. We will witness which path they continue to choose. Meanwhile, consider Gary Johnson, Libertarian candidate for the Presidency.

I would still like Paul Ryan to answer the question that he avoided about taxes. They were asked who would get a tax break, and who would get a tax increase and of course he used his jargon to tiptoe around the question since he didn't want the blatently say middle class will be paying more, rich get wealthier. Atleast Biden used the term 'middle class" when addressing the answer. Either or, it seemed like both candidates skated around questions but In my opinion Biden did it less. Ryan seems more of a smooth talker, say what the people want to hear kind of guy. We all know how those kind are. They hire, build, support, invest in others, etc. It is what moves us along. Free enterprise. You could become rich. Make something, build something, design something, take a risk. Obama had a majority in Congress & Senate for two years. They never passed a budget or any other Bill that would have helped the Country. The major Bill passed was the Affordable Health Care Bill which was voted on by the majority without many of them taking the time to read it. The financial disaster can also be blamed on Clinton with the affordable housing Frank put in w/Fannie Mae-Freddie Mac, allowing those that could not afford a house to buy it anyway on the taxpayers dime. The wars added to that financial problem when Bush was in office, but think about 9/11, it wasn't put together in the 9 months after Bush took office, it took over 3 years (according to Al Queda informants) which then goes back to Clinton. We can all agree to disagree and vote for whom we wish, but the name calling, rudeness, etc., will hopefully be gone after this election. The division in this Country right now is sad and November 6th cannot come fast enough for me (a life-long Democrat). If Romney is elected, good luck in Canada & with their health care.

Obama and Dems had control of Congress and the Senate for 2 years and did nothing but ram thru that disaster, "Obamacare". Blaming those evil Repubs for everything fits his M.O. He blames everyone but himself for anything that goes wrong.
By the way, Obama continued the Patriot Act. Not sure what ya'll are referring to with Bush and the Dixie Chicks, but then again, everything is Bush's fault. Right? Even the financial crisis caused by forcing banks to give mortgages to those who couldn't afford them. Oh wait, if ya'll would educate yourself and do some research, ya'll would find out that it Barney Frank and the Dem's that actually did it, ignoring requests fom Bush to halt it. I guess the best way to fix the economy is to ignore the law and not pass a budget for the 4 years (oops!! Probably Bush's fault.) Enjoy Canada!!!!!!.

Yeah, let me get this straight. When Romney spoke over the moderator, went way over time, and avoided answering the questions he was asked he was "winning", while when Biden was actually participating in a debate (and, let's face it, Romney vs Obama 1 was just talking points strung together, not a debate), he was being an obnoxious and crazy old man who wasn't acting vice presidential.

How's that double standard working out for you?

In reality, if Dems cared about helping those less fortunate, why have Obama & Biden donated so little to charity (public record of their tax returns). If Dems cared so much about the lower class, why hasn't all the years (dating to the 60's) of 'Entitlements' helped them to become middle class instead of generations repeating the same over and over again? Why won't Dem's reform Welfare, Medicaid, Medicare? It's obvious it has not helped the majority that use it, so why not reform & actually help those that need it? Nevermind, if reforms were made, hard decisions actually utilized, the Dem's would lose their baseline voters.

Please note this does not include his changes of position on abortion this past week. While maybe not exactly a lie, it certainly does not cause me to trust him more.

If u recall Obama took considerable heat from the right when he suggested on 1210 (Smerconish show), that he would get OBL even if he was in Pakistan. OBL is now sleeping with the fishes, after being attacked in Pakistan.

I hope that independents and undecideds were watching last night, and realize who has been only a heartbeat away from the Presidency the last four years! And the next four, if Obama-Biden are re-elected.

If Condescension was a gradeable quality, then certainly Joe Smirky Face carried the night. At least he covered much of the ground President Obama slept through in last week's debate. But the truly troubling aspect was seeing Biden smiling and laughing during discussions of Americans being killed in Libya and the possibility of Iran successfully developing nuclear weapons! What was THAT?!?

Paul Ryan accomplished exactly what he needed to prove. That he's a serious man; well schooled in the issues of the day; and sharp enough to be an exceptional Vice President. He did not allow Biden's cavalier antics to derail his focus or move him off message. He stood his ground; and pushed back when Biden attempted to play his game of dismissive condescension.

Truth be told, the debate was a lot closer than the two-touchdown Presidential blowout in Denver last week. And those of us on both sides won't agree on who won last night. But I really, really hope the voters who were undecided before this debate took a long look at who would be a heartbeat away from the Presidency after the November 6 election.

The contrast was remarkable!

Where are the specifics in the tax cut plan? How will Romney make up for the loss in revenue? You know he won't address carried interest or capital gains tax loopholes. So what's left? The bottom line is that taxes have to go up. The question is who will be paying the bulk of the increase. Bush cut the taxes and where did it leave us, unpaid wars and higher national debt. And what about the high unemployment due to lack of regulation that put major companies out of business? Remember the bailouts? Nobody will create jobs when you have greedy corporations who answer to shareholders and a Gov. ladened with debt. Our problems will not be solved overnight by any one person.

Well, first off, Ryan wasn't "begging" for money anymore than any other Congressional Rep does when it would benefit thier constituents. Ryan would have abandoned his Representative responsibility if he didn't seek such benefits once the decision is made to make them available.

One expects their Representative, regardless of their political philosophies, to do what's right for their constituents when the time comes to act. So there was nothing wrong with Ryan seeking benefits for his District once the decision was made to enact the stimulus.

Ryan did right by Wisconsin when he wrote those letters to Biden!

To Mike Shortall - If Congressman Paul Ryan and fellow Congressman that voted against the stimulus, clearly did not see it as a benefit to their constituents, because they didn't vote for the stimulus bill. Therefore, non-of them should have begged or for any of that money.

What you fail to realize here or turn a blind eye to is the fact that Congressman Paul Ryan only voted no on the stimulus, for a couple of reasons: (1) - The anti-American pledge to take down a President. (2) - It provides him with the ability to make the claim that he voted against it, which satisfies the party loyalist voters.

Mr. Shortall, This is a case of Congressman Paul Ryan being against the stimulus before he was for the stimulus. This is a case of Congressman Paul Ryan, who like most all Congressman, know what the votes they have and going into a vote. That information allows them to play his political game. This is a case of Congressman Paul Ryan's hypocrisy, just like many other acts of Congress members who make political calculations.

Bottom line here is that Congressman Paul Ryan knew, as you said, that the stimulus was in the best interest of his constituency, and his no vote was political gamesmanship.

No, Ernest, you are simply trying to obfuscate the difference between being a politician and serving as a Representative of ALL the people in your constituency.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with opposing a legislative action in principle but - once the law is passed, even if over your strenuous objections - ensuring that your constituents (including those who might disagree with your philosophical opposition) benefit from the program you opposed.

If Mr Ryan was my Congressional Rep, I would be more than a little upset if he refused to seek benefits that would help the people in my District just because he opposed the measure based on HIS political beliefs. That would be a reason to vote AGAINST such a Representative the next time he ran for re-election!

There's a time for Politics and a time for Governing. Learn the difference!

Mr. Shortall - Your argument is that Congressman Paul Ryan took stimulus money to BENEFIT his constituents, exactly why the stimulus was not only necessary, but beneficial and successful. Congressman should not be casting their votes on "principle" as you say. Members of Congress should be casting their votes on what will best serve their constituents.

Clearly, Congressman Ryan knew all along that the stimulus was the right thing to do as well as necessary, otherwise he would not have taken the stimulus money.

This impart is why Congress has been failing the American people. Personal ideology and votes based on "principle" interfere with the process of governing, which is and has been destructive to America.

Congress is full of too many who behave as entitled, selfish, and immature brats who are only their for themselves, and all the privileges, of access, lucrative benefits, and a pay check, all at the expense of the average tax payer, and their votes more often than not go to the highest pocket lining bidder.

Mr. Shortall, part of governing is voting on legislation, and should never be a time for personal "principles" and/or politics. Further, Congressman Ryan taking the stimulus money to "benefit his constituents" was playing politics, only because he knew that they would not be so interested in supporting him in the future if he hadn't.

Mike Shortall

You are so wrong, Ernest!

There is no reason why a Rep or Sen's overall political philosophy on spending, deficits, the economy, or the role of National Government can not/should not be expressed when it comes to individual legislation like it did here with Ryan's vote against the stimulus.

If the only litmus test on what makes a "good bill" is whether or not it benefits a particular group, program or geographical area, then the Government would have collapsed decades ago under the weight of even more "free stuff" than we have now! That's part of the problem with the future stability of the economy, the spending of the Social Security "trust", and the ridiculous size of the debt!

If the only thing a legislator had to look at was how his people could benefit or get more "free stuff", then fiscal conservatives would NEVER win a seat in Congress. Fortunately, the electorate - for all the criticism they get - has a greater appreciation for what the real priorities should be.

Now that being said, I'll go back to my original point. There's nothing wrong with a fiscally conservative Congress member pursuing the benefits of a stimulus - once it's been approved - for his constituency even if he opposed that same bill on principle as a bad decision for the overall health of the Country.

That a bill might "benefit" someone can't be the only test. That mandate has to be funded, and its funding - and other aspects - has to make sense in the overall scheme of things.

Comment_arrow

Earnest

10:47 pm on Friday, October 12, 2012

Mr. Shortall, it is you who said the stimulus money was asked for by Congressman Ryan, to "benefit" his constituency. If you think Congressman Ryan's vote under the guise of "principle" wasn't a vote for his own self interest and for a "particular group" a.k.a. Republican's to serve their anti-American pledge to take down the United States Presidency, you are highly mistaken.

Again, this is in part why Congress is so dysfunctional. There are too many that are self serving...living off the public dole, getting "free stuff" as long as he can maintain a seat in Congress. This is something that Congressman Ryan has been doing most of his life. He benefited from "entitlements" after his fathers passing that got him through college, and outside of driving the wiener mobile, he has been a "public worker" receiving benefits and pay checks curtesy of the tax payer.

Now me personally I am against getting an abortion, I would not get one. However, I will not pass judgment on someone else who decides to get one. No person has the right to tell another person what they can and cannot do with their body, it is their choice, no matter what faith they believe in. Only that person and God, Allah, The Creator, whatever you prefer, knows why that woman decided to get one, and if the reason was bogus, when that person leaves this earth they have to deal with God. So if abortion is outlawed, one part will give the baby away, another won't take care of the baby at all, and then there are those that will just kill the baby themselves because they don't want to handle the responsibility. Now I'm not saying abortion is good population control but let that person still choose what they want to do with their own body. Judgment is for God not for crazed religious nuts who only think their way is right. Also, remember the reason why there are so many denominations of religion is because someone didn't agree on how God should be worshipped.

The issue is not that simple, case in point it is legal to kill a baby as it exits the Birth canal ( partial birth abortion ) but if the baby slips through and then is aborted seconds after bing born it is murder. Just remember it was not so many years ago it was legal for a man to kill his wife and or children since they were considered property. Be careful of the road you travel since it could be a slippery slope.

I think the winners are those who chose not to watch the debate at all.

Why is it that no President is ever held accountable for the promises they make before they are elected into office? Why do we not have quarterly updates where the President tells the country the status of his promises? At my job I am held accountable and need to make sure things get done properly and on time.

The debates are simply an opportunity for each candidate to bad mouth the other party, spew facts as fast as they could (who knows who is telling the truth), and try to sway as many voters minds as they can. Not one of them answered the questions posed without taking a few jabs at the other party.

Anyone can make promises that sound great. I want to know HOW those promises are going to get done. Both candidates were unable to answer the "How".

Sorry, Bri but history tells us otherwise. JFK (a Dem) said, " A risiing tide lifts all ships". He and Ronald Reagan cut taxes across the board and the INCREASED ECONOMIC ACTIVITY (ie; "j-o-b-s"), which actually increased revenues to the federal goverment. So Obama can play class warfare, but what's really in the best interests of the lower & middle class is to get the economy moving at a 3 1/2-4/12% rate like Reagan and not the measly 1-1.5% that we've had for the last 3+ years under Obama. The Dems boast about their job creation, but if you analyze the #'s, they should be ashamed of only being able to create 140,000 jobs a month - when in the Reagan recovery it was 3-400,000+ jobs a month.

With all due respect, your comment "....certain amount of people to remain in the gutter or they won't prosper", is curious to me. Do you consider welfare a success? If so, how? Many that lived on welfare when first put in place now have their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren still on welfare over 40 years later. I am all for a hand up but not a hand out. Just as I believe there should be term limits on all elected offices, I believe there should be time limits on the length one can be given 'entitlements'. Helping others is something all of us should do that can afford to, but that does not mean we should be taken as fools. There will always be those more fortunate or less fortunate, and it up to each of us to help others, but not be used as fools. Not everyone can be successful, i.e. drop out rate of minority students in Philadelphia Public High Schools, free education, paid for on our dime but not utilized the way it was meant to be. The majority of the drop outs will live off the system and not be successful & that is not the Republican's fault, that is the parent(s), guardian, etc.

As a life-long Democrat, I respectfully disagree. Some actually do their research (not on websites that are partisan towards one or the other) but research voting records, statements, etc. Some do not tow the 'Party Line' and act as sheep going to slaughter when they enter a voting booth. Hopefully those that are educated realize that both parties have good and bad about them and it is the candidate's views and history that should count when voting. It seems the 24 hour news cycle has made everyone an 'expert' on their opposition without realizing that facts are altered, statements cut out, etc. The mainstream news has also assisted in polarizing the Country during elections. If only instead of all of us debating who won or lost, the emphasis was put on we the people coming out the winners. That would be a novel idea, 'eh?

Remember, after the first debate in which President Obama remained Presidential and decided to stay above the fray and not cite every Romney untruth (there were 27 in his 38 minutes), he was hammered without mercy by every pundit on TV and in print for being "detached", "passive" and "uneffective." And he has paid the price for those comments in the polls taken since that first debate. So Biden really had no choice - he could stay calm and cool, and risk the same reviews that the President got, or he could play the game the way the networks apparently need it played and make each Ryan lie and misstatement - 24 during 40 minutes this time - crystal clear. I'm glad he chose to handle it the way he did, though it saddens me that our leaders have to put on a show like this in order to get elected. I actually think that the debate format as it exists doesn't work anymore. What do you do when one side decides that they will simply lie their way through? Like Newt Gingrich said after debating Mitt Romney, "You can't debate someone who is dishonest, you just can't." That's the problem here, David.

Romney, Debate #1: 27 lies in 38 minutes.
Ryan, VP Debate: 24 lies in 40 minutes.
Newt Gingrich, after debating Mitt Romney: "You can't debate somebody who is dishonest, you just can't."

Anybody who's paying attention knows which side is struggling to tell the truth in the face of a neverending stream of lies, myths, and dishonesty.

I think it's funny that the same people who keep repeating the 47% misstatement are ignoring Joe Biden's misstatement last week, when he said that the Middle Class have been suffering tremendously over the last 4 years. In fact, they're forgetting a lot about Joe Biden, like the fact that he rose in politics by just barely passing law school at the bottom of his class, after plagiarizing his thesis and was later caught plagiarizing speeches from other politicians. Those are proven facts, available to anyone with a computer or who visits the library.

Joe Biden came off as arrogant and condescending, which is exactly what turns off independent voters. Don't believe me? Take a look at the polls last night and today. Even CNN called the debate for Ryan and election polls show that after a commanding lead all year, Obama now only has 7 out of 50 states in his corner and three of those are considered uncertain. By the way, Pennsylvania has been moved from strongly Obama to a 'toss up', according to polls.

President Romney and Vice President Ryan... get used to saying it.

Who won depends on what an individual prioritizes in judging a debate. Style points probably put it at a tie, because Ryan's robotic nature certainly is the counter balance to Biden's smirking. But if you are judging it on content and substance, Biden won this easily. Ryan still refused to provide details, even when pressed for them and Biden had Ryan on the ropes several times with things like Ryan's requests for stimulus money. Also, Biden has an amazing wealth of knowledge and facts to draw from off the top of his head on a multitude of issues. And today's fact check of the debate also show Biden to have been more truthful through the debate...

Biden was a disgrace to the office of VP similar to his boss. This debate wasn't even close as Biden was rude while Ryan showed significant patience and class. The moderator was clearly in Biden's hip pocket letting Biden interrupt at will and cutting off Ryan in the middle of his much shorter responses to the buffoon's blundering.

I would say that this is a misreading of the statement, that a bunch of rightwing sites are clinging to. Here is what he actually said: “And, by the way, they talk about this Great Recession if it fell out of the sky, like, ‘Oh, my goodness, where did it come from?’ It came from this man voting to put two wars on a credit card, to at the same time put a prescription drug benefit on the credit card, a trillion-dollar tax cut for the very wealthy. I was there. I voted against them. I said, ‘No, we can’t afford that.’”

As I heard it and again now read it, what Biden is talking about is compounding the war costs with the tax cuts and prescription drug benefits, which is what he voted against doing. The key part of that sentence is: "...to at the same time..." Biden certainly didn't forget that he voted for those wars and he doesn't shy away from talking about that fact. He continually denounces those votes as having been mistakes.

Shall we also not forget Biden when lecturing Ryan on the Romney/Ryan abortion stance, stated that he would not "Impose" his beliefs on others. Check his voting record, he imposed his religious beliefs about abortion on others numerous times. Of course that was before he aspired to be the President or Vice-President. Once that happened, his imposition on others regarding his beliefs suddenly disappeared.

Obama did the same with same-sex marriage. Opposed it for years and then suddenly as re-election loomed, he changed his mind. Perhaps both he and Biden had a divine intervention to change their stances or perhaps they are politicians (just as Ryan and Romney are) and they are catering to their core base of voters and saying what they think the base wants to hear. Myself, I prefer to hear the truth, the honest truth, not the political truth.

Ryan held his own, but his answers were too vague. I still want to know what deductions they are planning on cutting. Mortgage interest? If so my taxes will increase (a lot) even if they don't technically increase taxes percentages. They need to state specifics about the loopholes and deductions. Biden did smirk too much, and he bumbled a few answers, but I though he was solid and confident. I really wouldn't want either guy to be President, to be honest.

My prediction: Obama will easily win PA. The popular vote will be close, but Obama will get more electoral votes. Not a landslide by far - but a solid win. Oh, and I am a Nate Silver fan, so really this is his prediction, not mine, but he knows stats much better than I do.

Despite that, i'm not part of the whole "government needs to give me a job" mindset. You get off your butt, get to school and be more competetive in the job market. Whining that the President is doing a bad job because you don't have one is not intelligent. As far as the economy goes, no one is dying of starvation. In fact, I feel were going in a good direction with the Obama plan. Healthcare costs are ridiculous. While they make the 1% rich, they leave the middle class struggling. At least, Obama has an idea about this whereas Romney simply writes it off as a non-issue catering to that Obama haters. Government works for the people by the people. He also lies so often, so easily, about big things, little things, how can you trust him? Does he have ANY core beliefs that he hasn't flipped on?

To your statement about the economy and jobs I would say, the Republican's are blocking jobs bills, mucking up the works to slow the economy hoping it'll get Obama out. That tells me all I need to know about the todays Republican party. Win at ANY cost. Playing with people's lives? Really? And then the brass to say Obama won't compromise . . . it's all the President's fault . . . like American's won't see what they're doing?

I can't get behind that. Obama's tried, but Repubs decided the night before the inauguration they weren't gonna play ball. I'm not voting for that, doesn't line up with my morals, and that's just for starters That's not how you earn my vote.

@Mike- i disagree with your assessment that the economy under the democrats isn't going anywhere, not when unemployment is inching lower, foreclosures declining and the stock market doubling since he took office. sure, you can argue that more could be done, and that the deficit needs to be addressed, but you can't say that the economy is tanking right now; especially considering where it was in 2008. to overlook all that is illogical. we're in a recovery. there's no denying that. Mitt Romney wants us to ignore that, declare the opposite, and then gamble on him that he could do it better by changing course even tho he has no specific details as to how he would accomplish that. Why should anyone vote for him in the face of that?

Jobs numbers affected mostly by part-time seasonal holiday hirings, not full-time jobs. These will disappear in early January.

The stock market had crashed to 7000-something when Obama entered The White House. Most of the "doubling" of the stack market was its recovery to levels that existed in 2008.

The President had three-plus years to pull the economy together. He has done nothing to sustain growth or to consistently add the kinds and numbers of jobs needed to expand the economy.

Are we focused on the important issues? It appears to me that the important issues are rarely being considered! Abortion and same sex marriage do not put food on the table or help make car payments. Where we are and where we need to be is what we should be asking ourselves. We should be asking why the economy hasn’t improved in the last four years. Why hasn't Obama implemented a jobs program not in the election year but back in 2009 or even 2010? Why hasn't Obama found a way to support small business which employs 75% of the total US workforce? Why does Obama continue to bleed the US by paying for Mexico's poverty problem? Why doesn't he force Mexico to address their own poverty problems; and why should they when the current administration is more than willing to spend the money that could be spent to take care of you on them! What does Obama care do for you? Have you read the specifics detailed in the Obama care plan? Democrats and republicans alike need to be greatly concerned. It makes me wonder why it was even initiated. With the exception of the media and holly wood personnel (they make their money based on arguments and dissention) are you better off today than you were four years ago? Scott, dont try to talk sense. Ryan made a strong case for working with the Dems, that they would return LEADERSHIP to our government. The current administration wants to ignore what is arguably half the country and push an agenda so far left it hurts, then blame the other party for the result. That is not leadership. We will continue to be polarized by this administration and every day that passes the administration drives the wedge between us deeper and deeper. Again, lack of leadership. That is there plan. Just call everything lies, when the reality of it is a difference of opinion. We tried it his way for 4 years. The results are obvious. It is time to try something else! If we could just get the spending under control. Everyone wants to argue taxes when we need to argue cut the spending. Lets start with the "green" spending. That is a start that gets us a few billion dollars in the right direction. How about independence from the middle east by utilizing our natural resources? That will create jobs, strengthen the dollar, and help put us back on our feet. The fact is the technology can not, at this point, replace carbon based fuels. One average size waste water treatment plant can take 3-4 megawatts of electricity just to treat the influent to current standards. Solar or wind can not replace that!

Scott, there is a difference between important issues to all and important issues to you... and what you are missing is the greater picture involved in what apparently is not important to you. You complain about jobs and funding to Mexico being more important but abortion is not just an issue of being irresponsible after a few too many and wanting an out...its about freedom to have a personal choice not based on one's personal religious belief when that religion or belief may or may not be the one you share....and if those rights are taken away...do you think it will end there?

And Scott...Same sex marriage is not just about gay people and their petty wants.... its about all people having equal rights when it comes to finances, taxes, income, debt, adoptions, estate planning, insurance...rights they don't have now because the law does not recognize such equality of a gay couple's relationship making life for such potentially that much more difficult. Again, if we are allowed to segregate some, we will no doubt revert to a time when trying to deny additional rights to more will continue until those wanting all the power will achieve that end goal.

President Washington's concerns about having political parties is validated by many of the posters on this thread. His concern was that the people would become loyal to party and not to country.

Serious fact checking and getting into the minutia of policies, is clearly missing from most comments on this thread. My hat is off to David who actually took the time to address depths of several comments made by Mr. Wilson.

Earnest, you are wrong. I don't feel the way I do because of a party. I feel this way because I am not being represented. The principals that founded this country are going away. Our government has become what we fought to change and worse. Socialism has been proven not to work. It continues to be proven not to work. Spain, Italy, the signs are all around us but the socialistic spending continues, with no checks or balances. We can't afford to continue on this path. People must build their family by themselves. The middle class has all the opportunity to build something yet we are told that the american dream must be stolen from those that have already figured out how to achieve that goal. And by the way, the "american dream" number has fallen from a million dollars to just two hundred and fifty thousand. I spend quite a bit of time un-doctrinating my kids. History is told differently than when I was a kid. How can that be? This is NOT a party thing. It is not rich against poor! I, by no means are rich. I struggle to think of how I am going to pay for my children's college. In fact, that is the very reason I feel the way I do. It has NOTHING to do with party and everything to do with MY choice. This administration wants to take all the choices away from me. Free enterprise has built this country and lack of it will tear it down.

Gov Romney is not a good choice. The 47% comment deeply concerns me. And the fact that. People has overlooked that is Shocking. It will be a sad day if he is elected. The truth is we still have some very deep rooted racism in this country.Get over it.

No depth needed for that argument. Just blame "white people".

Do your research on energy resources. There is a whole big world out there of options. Do some research. You don't have to dig far for better energy solutions. Our foreign policy should begin w looking around at our own country first, and becoming a people we can be proud to be.

You don't have to dig far to discover solutions, but you have to dig far to get the solution of the energy of today. That is oil, sorry to be crude (No pun intended) but the green energy technology is not practical today. Oil drives everything for the foreseeable future, that is just a fact, Drill our own and the Middle East becomes a sandbox we can avoid forever.. Sharpie...Grow the F-up.

So if Obama gets elected, will the Republicans accept it and agree to work together, or will they fume and plan for the next election. If Romney gsts elected will the Democrats act the same way? The country is in the shape it is in because we are incapable of working together. Playing tug of war gets us absolutely nowhere. That is the reason we are failing. We need to put our pride away and stop rooting for our "team", This isn't the Super Bowl. Whoever wins, the other side needs to agree to work with that team. Sure, you can disagree, and you can present another points of view and other possible solutions. However, as long as the losing side digs in stubbornly and refuses to be part of the solution, we will all get absolutely nowhere. How many people on this thread would be willing to partner, say within local government, with someone of an opossing party - to be civil and respectful - to work toward really understanding the other's point of view - without insults and name calling? Would it even be possible? We all need to grow up and stop acting like playground bullies and sore losers. The Middle East won't destroy us - we are doing a fine job of destroying ourselves, acting like spoiled children.

Let the attack on my opinion commence.

And I as I think more about your post. The more I think it always the republicans have to "reach out". No I think the conservatives win and implement our ideas on the national stage, with little or no compromise. The national socialist agenda we have witnessed for the past few years tells me that Obama, Reid and Pelosi's ideals are not only wrong but just stupid. Socialism never works it is always bankrupt. Intentions are not equal to actions. Actions have consequences. And the Dems policies (intentions made actions) have consequenced us into the dirt..domestic and abroad.

And the Republicans said their #1 priority was to make Obama a one term President. So, we know the Repubs won't work with the Democrats. Both parties are big babies - and they are killing us. There is a difference between compromising principles and basic, effective, compromise. The most successful Presidents in history were the ones who brought both sides together - who found middle ground where progress could be made. If our politicians can't figure that out, then it makes on difference who is elected, we will fail as a country. Both sides need to give, regardless of who is in office.

Yes, I am a Dem - mostly for social reasons. Obama is certainly not my messiah - I don't even understand what that means exactly. Are you implying I worship Obama? That is a pretty silly thing to say, isn't it? I'll vote for him, but I can accept if he doesn't win. Reaganite, would you be willing to work with me on a political project? Could you respect my intelligence and points of view even if you don't agree with them? Or, will you just write off everything I say as nonsense because I vote differently than you? I can tell you have well thought out opinions and research the issues that are important to you. I don't judge you or the way you think and I don't make assumptions about your "messiah". We the People are a big part of the problem. The politicians reflect our own poor behavior and inability to work together. I agree with Obamacare, but I agree with you too. I would have been much happier with it if it had more Republican support. I think the parties should have come together and both added to a major healthcare reform. Instead one party did all they could to stop it and the other pushed it through any way they could. Can't you agree both sides are in the wrong?

Camy I will agree that politicians can be our worst but I have seen some of them as the best we have to offer (while not in front of a camera). I think we can both agree that term limits for all congress, will allow fresh ideas in more consistently. Enough of this being a career,

That said, I disagree with your politics and I will continue to convince more voters that my ideas are the right ideas. Socialism has failed everywhere it is tried. As for social issues I think that is just another way of saying you are liberal. I will not waste my time with an adult who closes their eyes to reality, as harsh as it is.

Ummm, we aren't a Socialist country. Obama isn't a Socialist. Why do people keep saying that? Just because you have policies and opinions that help the American public as a whole, does not make a person a Socialist.

When I say that I am a Democrat for mostly social reasons, my two biggest reasons are marriage equality and womens' rights over her own body. If believing that makes me a liberal, then I am a liberal, and proud to be one. Based on that, you catagorize me as "an adult who closes her eyes to reality"? That is unfortunate. That would mean that you won't "waste your time" with about 50% of the American public. You think I close my eyes on reality? Look in the mirror. Whose eyes are closed? It seems you will only spend your time with people who argee with you. How will any progress ever be made?

And Camy any woman who is mainly voting for marriage equality and womens rights is quite telling. Gay marriage and abortion, in which case I oppose both. Abortion is simply the uneccessary termination of a baby's life. You and I will always be worlds apart...there is no compromise ZERO. Gay marriage...the states can decide. But the fact you support Obamacare is simply proof that you have not thought it through to the proper conclusion. Medical care will be rationed (as it is in Toronto and London). Mainly the simple stuff. This already happening, Candians have told us not to this...this is why they come here. And I have news for you as well, all the rich people will still have better medical coverage than us. Liberal or Conservative...they will be better off than those of us that have to live by this socialist mandate/tax. This is not my theory...this is history...it already has and is happening.

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have some terrific plans for the nation. Help the rich become richer. Make poor and middle class Americans pay more for their healthcare. Force Medicare to become insolvent by 2016, as the CBO reports. Follow a tax plan that does not make mathematical sense as experts say. Lower taxes for millionaires and billionaires. Strip women of the opportunity for legal abortion and full healthcare. Not allow the LGBT community equal rights. Romney and Ryan are determined to take us BACKWARDS to the 1960s! Yippee!

The Obama-Biden tax plan calls for a hike in the small business tax rate from 35 percent today to over 40 percent next year. Obama argues “only” 3% of small business owners will be affected by his tax rate hike. Tt masks the fact that this is a tax increase on one million successful small businesses (i.e. 3% of the 30 million small business tax returns filed annually).

The Obama-Biden plan will raise taxes on a majority of small business profits and hit those companies which employ the majority of Americans who work for small businesses. Here’s how:

Unlike corporations, business profits flow through to owners. The owner pays taxes on her small business by adding profits to her income tax form. Therefore, personal income taxes are the same thing as small business taxes.

The Obama-Biden plan to raise the top two marginal income tax rates (from 33 and 35 percent today to 36 and 39.6 percent, respectively) is a hike in America’s small business tax rate. This does not include Obamacare’s 3.8 percent small business surtax.

Per the IRS, most small business profits face taxation in households making more than $200,000 per year. The IRS keeps track of two types of small business income: sole proprietors, and “pass-through” entities like partnerships and S-corps. There are 30 million tax returns reporting small business income. Owners report business profits of $590 billion. $477 billion faced taxation in households making more than $200,000 a year. Untruthful, him?
