Important Information for the Aftermath of the Ice Storm

As our region struggles in the aftermath of the massive ice storm that left entire communities without power, here are a few things to know.

As our region struggles in the aftermath of the massive ice storm that left entire communities without power, here are a few things to know:

  • If a traffic light is out, it should be treated as a four-way stop.
  • If your power is out, it’s a good idea to keep faucets running in an attempt to avoid frozen pipes.
  • Please use caution and common sense if attempting to heat your home using alternative means. “Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that is found in combustion fumes like those made by generators, lanterns and gas ranges and can be fatal,” the Governor’s Office reminded residents in a statement.
  • If you do have a generator (lucky you!), make sure it’s outside at all times when running.
  • Many homeowner’s insurance policies will cover the cost of spoiled food in the event of a power outage. Check with your insurance company to see if yours does.

If it gets too cold in your home, there are places you can go to get warm.
