The More the Merrier: Volunteers are the Most Valuable Players in Town Fair Success

The annual Southampton Days Country Fair is built on a volunteer-based foundation, and its success relies on the amount of help the Southampton Days Committee receives.

The annual Southampton Days Country Fair is set to kick off on Monday, July 4.

Carnival rides and food, the Fourth of July parade and fireworks and all kinds of games and prizes make up the week-long community summer get-together. There are crafts, concerts and funnel cakes. This country fair offers a wide variety of fun and entertainment for the entire family.

Stephanie Miller, who has been on the Southampton Days Committee for three years, said none of this could be possible without volunteers from the community.

“Without the volunteers and help of people donating their time to Southampton Days,” Miller said, “we would not be able to put on this event for the community that’s been happening for 40 years.”

Miller said that the non-profit Southampton Days Committee runs all of the Southampton Days affairs.

“I think a lot of people think the township does it,” Miller said. “The Southampton Township has nothing to do with it. The committee is all volunteer-base.”

There are still many ways that the committee’s fellow community members can contribute to the success of the fast approaching carnival. The set-up efforts at the Pozzi Field at Tamanend Park, alongside Klinger Middle School, take place on Saturday July 2 and Sunday July 3 at 9am. Volunteers are needed for tents, concerts, hanging banners and more.

Throughout the week people can help with children’s games, pie eating contests and the ticket booths, especially on the wrist band nights. Help will also be needed for break down on Saturday July 9, when the early-July fun comes to a close.

More opportunities to volunteer for the Southampton Days Committee lie in the monthly meetings. The committee meets on the first Thursday of every month, all year, at 7pm in the farm house at Tamanend Park.

“There’s a lot that people can volunteer and help with,” Miller said. “We will be more than happy to welcome them.”
