Outside the Blue: A Homegrown Band Excited to Make Southampton Days Debut

Outside the Blue will be featured on the Midway Stage at Southampton Days on July 6th. The band, influenced by multiple decades of rock music, has a diverse mix of covers and original music in store for the Southampton crowd.

Taking over the Midway Stage on Wednesday, July 6th, Southampton based rock band, Outside The Blue, will be bringing with them a brand of sound both familiar and refreshingly new.

Citing influences ranging from Tom Petty to the Foo Fighters, as well as from YES to Queen, guitarist Dave Mathewson said it’s really difficult to put any hard and fast label on the band.

“Really, what we wanted to do is start something completely unique,” said Mathewson.  “We play a lot of old school rock along with newer stuff - it all kind of mixes together and creates a cool sound.”

With some members of Outside the Blue more than a decade apart, Mathewson credits the band's rare sound to the span of years between its members.

“Growing up in different ages of music definitely brings an edge to [the band],” he said.  “I think it gives a distinctively classic rock influence to our music.”

Although most of the group is from the Hatboro-Horsham area, the band really got things going playing together at Southampton’s .

“We always say we’re from Southampton,” said Mathewson.  “Because that’s really where everything started for us.”

The band has headlined popular music clubs throughout Philadelphia like the Fire and the Grape Room, as well several bars thoughout Bucks and Montgomery Counties.  They have also been known to play a random coffee house or two.

Planning to release an EP before the close of 2011, Mathewson  thinks a show like Southampton Days is the perfect way to get warmed up before hitting the studio.

“This is a really cool way for us to get ready to record,” he said.  “We just love playing out.  I don’t think any of us have a lot of patience when it comes to recording.  We spend a decent amount of time crafting songs, really focusing on getting our act together.  But our first love is just being out there, just playing.”

For Mathewson and his band mates, it’s all much more of a passion than it is a business.

“We just enjoy hanging out,” he said.  “This is supposed to be a fun thing and we find a lot of enjoyment in it.  We just don’t see it as all business.”

Mathewson said the band is planning to perform a mix of covers and original music for the crowd at the Southampton Days fair.

“We’re just trying to keep it interesting for Southampton,” he said.  “We’ve definitely got some covers lined up.  But we’re probably going to do a good 10 or 11 originals too.”

Being from Southampton, the band seems more than hyped to make their debut appearance at the annual festival.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” said Mathewson.  “We’re just happy for the opportunity to get out there, to be playing outdoors.  We’re all local - it’s just a fun party to be a part of and we’re really excited for it.”
