There's a New Game in Town

With seven pool tables and plans to add a game room on the top floor, Corner Pocket Billiards hopes to offer locals another way to beat the heat this summer.

Blink as you drive down Second Street Pike and chances are you'll miss it.

Tucked away in the small shopping center across from the old train station, behind the Oskar Huber furniture store, is Southampton’s newest business venture, .

Just opened a couple weeks ago by Jayme Stier and her husband, Kevin, the new pool lounge aims to do something the community always seems to be in need of: mainly, give people something to do with their free time.

“It’s just something [Kevin] always wanted to do,” said Jayme Stier.  “He grew up in a pool hall and when his friend closed his place down, he was kind of heartbroken about it.  We figured, we have the time now - we might as well do it.”

A small entrance leads into the place, but that’s a bit deceiving.

Once inside the building, it opens up into a spacious split-level lounge with seven pool tables, five on the ground floor and two more up a small set of stairs.

The front counter offers an assortment of snacks and refreshments.  The shop sells professional, custom-made cues and cases as well.

A juke box in the corner provides all the ambiance you’ll need for an afternoon of billiards.

There’s plenty of room between tables too.  So, unlike a typical night at the bar, you won’t be rubbing elbow to elbow, accidentally poking every other pool player in the back with your cue stick.

Located in the building that used to house Bordz Skate Shop, a lot of work needed to be done to turn the space into a functioning pool hall.

Stier said she and her husband did most of the renovations themselves, a process that took close to four months.

"We took down a wall, added a bathroom," said Stier.  "We built the railing for the second floor, re-carpeted the entire building, [and] repainted every wall.  It was previously graffiti from the skate park.  The rest was just minor cosmetic stuff."

The pool hall was ready to open at the end of June, but that doesn’t mean the renovations have stopped.  Stier has her eyes set on converting a large room on the upper floor into a gaming room.

“We’re going to get a big screen TV in there and set it up with an Xbox and a Wii or something,” she said.

As to why they picked Southampton to open up a pool hall, Stier said that when she and her family moved to Southampton from Philadelphia, one of the things that struck her was the lack of entertainment available to the younger crowd in town.

“There are just so many teenagers and young adults walking around,” she said.  “And there’s nothing for them to do.”

Corner Pocket Billiards hopes to remedy that situation.  And at $5 per person per hour, it’s not a bad deal.

“I think it’s awesome,” said Jack Foley of Southampton, who has made a couple visits to the pool hall already.  “Anytime there’s something to do, somewhere to go in this town – it’s a plus.  I really hope it works out for [the owners].”

Corner Pocket Billiards is open Sunday – Thursday from 12:00 PM to 12:00 AM.  Friday and Saturday, you can shoot pool until 2 AM.

"We're family run," Stier said.  "So there's no smoking, no alcohol.  Everyone is welcome."
