5 Things: May 4

Tidbits of information to soak up while you drink your coffee.

1. Centennial School District: The Reading Olympics is still providing valuable lessons and rewards, as complete lists of must-reads are available. The elementary, middle and senior high collections are simply waiting for your eyes and interest.

2. Upper Southampton Township: If you have been involved in an accident recently and would like to obtain a copy of the report, the Upper Southampton Township Police Department can accommodate your request. Click here for outlined guidelines on how to proceed.

3. Billboard Number One: Today in 1999, Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca” topped the charts.  As the lead singer of Menudo, Martin experienced  popularity that exploded in the United States in the late 1990s. This song was ridiculously over-played, and I am pretty certain you need to see the video again—because the last time you saw it was on TRL.

4.  Today is the tenth annual National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy sponsored by the National Campaign. In 2009, the rate declined six percent.  But, there are always more opportunities to be educated on the issue, and knowing the stats and facts is a great start.

 4. “May the fourth be with you.” Today is known to fans as “Stars Wars Day.” Although I am not a fan, I do appreciate that a character in the series bears my last name.

5. Green tip of the day: The Sierra Club encourages readers to make recycling easier at the office. Sometimes, choosing to throw that soda can or water bottle in the trash is simply a result of inaccessible or sparse recycling containers. Place recycling containers right next to the trash can or in each lobby to contribute to the green effort.  (Just don’t place them in front of exits or stairways. Frankly, it's a hazard.)
