Action Karate Offers Free Self Defense Seminars

For Mike Minniti, head instructor of Action Karate in Feasterville, Karate is more than just punching and kicking.

“So many people think Karate is a whole lot of kicks and punches,” Minniti said. “But, Karate is also about self defense.”

Action Karate will hold two free self-defense seminars at its Feasterville location, on July 27 at 12:30 p.m. and July 31 at 8:30 p.m.

According to Minniti, the seminars will take place after regular classes are concluded for the day. He said the idea came after considering how some jobs require people to leave their place of work at late hours.

“What if someone grabs your wrist or puts you in a bear hug and takes you away,” Minniti asked. “We feel that’s becoming more and more important these days, especially for employees who work late at night.”

While the seminars have late-night workers in mind, Minniti said that anyone interested in self defense may attend.

Minniti and another instructor, a fourth-degree black belt who recently graduated from the Temple University Ambler Police Academy, will instruct the seminars.

The seminar will last for approximately an hour. It will begin with a warm-up and transition to techniques on self defense, such as:

  • Breaking away from a wrist hold or strangle hold
  • Avoiding being struck with a weapon
  • Gun and knife defense

“There are so many different way that someone could approach you,” Minniti said. “And, there are different techniques of getting out.”

Participants are encouraged to wear workout clothes, and may attend one or both seminars.

They are also encouraged to pre-register for the seminars by contacting  Minniti at 267-872-0831 or at mminniti25@gmail.com.
