Weather Service Issues Flash Flood Watch

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly issued a flash flood watch this morning for the Philadelphia area including Bucks and Montgomery counties.

According to the weather service, tropical rains threaten to produce pockets of flash flooding at times into Wednesday evening.

General rainfall of 2-4 inches is expected through Wednesday in the I-95 corridor from near Trenton through the Philadelphia metro area into northern Delaware.

The primary flood threat is for small streams and poor drainage areas. Bands of heavy showers with embedded thunderstorms can easily produce 1-2 inches of rain in an hour’s time. If a band of heavy showers lingers, excessive rainfall would result in flooding.

Here’s a look at the NWS forecast for Southampton:

• This Afternoon: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, with a high near 83. Southwest wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

• Tonight: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Low around 71. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

• Wednesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 8am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 84. Southwest wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

• Wednesday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. Southwest wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

• Thursday: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 87. West wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

• Thursday Night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 68. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
