Weather Service Issues Heat Warning

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning, in effect until at least Thursday at 8 p.m.

The NWS said the warning, which was issued for the urban corridor from Trenton through Philadelphia to Wilmington, will likely extend until Friday and into the weekend.

The weather service predicts heat index values will be near 100 degrees on Wednesday afternoon and 101 to 105 degrees on Thursday afternoon.

An excessive heat warning indicated that a period of hot temperatures and high humidity levels is expected; the combined heat and humidity will create a hazard for those who are exposed to it for more than a short period of time.

NWS warns that the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity can create a potentially dangerous situation. They advise staying out of the sun in an air-conditioned room and checking up on friends and neighbors.

If you must work or spend time outside, NWS recommends taking extra precautions such as: rescheduling strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours, wearing lightweight and loose fitting clothing and drinking plenty of water.

To reduce heat risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned enviornments.

According the the NWS, anyone who is overcome by heat should be immediately moved to a cool and shaded location; heat stroke should be treated as a medical emergency.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 96. Heat index values as high as 101. Southwest wind between 6 and 11 mph. 

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 77. Southwest wind around 9 mph. 

Friday: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 99. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 78. 

Saturday: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 99. 

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 75. 

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 92. 

Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70.
