Exhaust from Generator Sparks 'Relatively Minor' Fire

The Churchville Lane blaze began in the shed of a two-story single family home and spread to the attic.

A Northampton man was forced to find a temporary residence after a fire that started in his shed spread to the attic of his Churchville Lane home, making it uninhabitable.

Northampton Fire Marshal Frank Fenton said the blaze, which started at 7:04 p.m. Saturday was under control within 20 minutes. He said the homeowner was forced to vacate, at least for the time being, because the residence was without electric and the fire had damaged circuits.

Fenton said that PECO had disconnected the electric to three homes - including the site of the fire - an hour prior to the fire starting. The cause of the fire, Fenton said, was the "hot exhaust from the generator coming into contact with combustible material" in the man's shed, where the generator was kept.
