FBI Warns of Latest Internet Scam

According to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, lawyer's identities are being used to set up fake websites for solicitation.

According to a release issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), a recent scam has surfaced in which the identify of a Texas attorney who had not practiced in years was used to set up a fake law firm website using the attorney's maiden name, former office address, and portions of her professional biography.

Other attorneys have complained about the use of their names and professional information to solicit legal work. All attorneys should be on the alert to this scam.

If you become aware of the same or a similar, situation involving your name/law firm you should immediately report the incident to local authorities, your state Bar Association and the FBI at the Internet Crime Complaint Center. Additionally, be sure to closely monitor your credit report or bank accounts to ensure that your identity is not the only thing being stolen.

If you have been a victim of an internet scam or have received an e-mail that you believe was an attempted scam, please file a complaint at www.IC3.gov.

Another scam I haven't sen reported is for rental properties. A Craigslist (first red flag) lists a property with an attractive price in a good area. The owners are on an extended stay out of the country (years....Mother is ill in Poland, whatever). So a furnished home that allows pets at a nice price in a good area is available right away. Just send first, last and one month and they'll send you the keys. Ok, lots of red flags there. And if the fact the couple is in Europe yet they want the funds sent to Nigeria don't cause you to ponder the deal you deserve to get ripped off.
