Residents Petition Township for Blacktop

Residents on Eagle Road say they have been denied access to services due to a lack of paving on their private road.

Mike Currie sees Eagle Road as the last frontier.

“We're the last unpaved road in the township and sooner or later we've got to get paved,” he said.

With those words Tuesday night, he presented the Board of Supervisors a petition he said was signed by 14 neighbors who are looking for blacktop for their 1,500-2,000 foot-long private road.

Currie said the lack of paving has presented some serious issues for residents.

He said an ambulance refused to drive up the street and some neighbors are having trouble getting their trash picked up at their homes.

Supervisor Stephen Wallin said he remembers that in the past some Eagle Road residents did not want paving because they feared their road would become a cut-through route.

Currie said the road has become that anyway.

Chairwoman Lola Biuckians suggested, and got agreement from her colleagues, that Township Manager Joe Golden prepare a brief report within a month that looks at the history of the road, specifically why it is unpaved, and options for possibly paving it. Biuckians also asked that Golden set up a meeting with Eagle Road residents.

Golden explained Wednesday that a private road has to meet certain requirements outlined in the township's subdivision and land development ordinance in order to be dedicated as a township road. Those criteria include satisfactory grading and drainage and “reasonable and minimum” grading.
