Slow Day at the Polls in Southampton

During a mid-day check in, election officials in Upper Southampton are reporting a low voter turn out.

Halfway through Election Day 2011 the 10 polling centers in Upper Southampton Township were reporting a voter turnout at or around 10 percent.

At Stackpole Elementary School, the polling place for the eastern most portion of the township, Election Official Franz Kautz said this is the first election in quite some time that there was not a line of residents ready and waiting to cast their vote at 7 a.m.

"There was only one person here when we opened this morning," he said. "Even in off years we usually have at least 10 people waiting."

Kautz blamed what he called a "lackluster ballot" for the voter apathy.

He said with most of the local officals running uncontested and no questions on the ballot, voting doesn't seem all that appealing to the average citizen.

The across the township seem to lend credence to Kautz's sentiment, with just a few voters filtering in and out throughout the day.
