A Final Farewell to Davis Elementary

Community members plan to gather Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. on the lawn of the former elementary school to say one last goodbye.

The Home and School Association is inviting members of the community to say a final goodbye to what remains of the former Davis Elementary School.

Members of the organization hope friends, former students, teachers and neighbors will join them on the lawn of the Maple Avenue school at 5 p.m. on Tuesday for an informal ceremony to “bid a fond adieu to Davis."

Lynne Lucot, president of the former Davis Home and School Association now co-president of the McDonald-Davis Home and School Association, said the celebration is just something that was “thrown together “to celebrate the community’s fond memories of the school, which served the neighborhood for over 50 years.

“We just wanted to do something to say we miss you, we love you and we had good times there,” she said. “One last goodbye.”

Lucot said two of Davis' former principals will be in attendance and will each make brief remarks about the school, as well as join in to lead the crowd in one final, rousing rendition of the school song.

She asks those who are planning to attend to bring noisemakers, posters, poppers, confetti, or anything they think would demonstrate their love and appreciation for the school.

In an event listing posted on Centennial’s website late Monday afternoon, the district warns that no parking will be available at the school for the impromptu event. They said those who plan to attend to should walk, or carpool over and walk from the side streets.

Davis Elementary School is being demolished as part of Centennial’s plan to consolidate its six former elementary schools into just three physical plants.

Following the demolition, the district will begin construction on a new, larger Region 1 Elementary School on the same site.

Lucot said later this week bricks from the former Davis Elementary School building will be made available to those who are interested.
