Centennial Hosts "Ground Opening" Ceremony at Region 1 Elementary Site

Shovels were present, but no dirt was turned, as officials posed for photos and announced construction would begin shortly at the Region 1 Elementary site.

Local BMX riders and skateboarders will have to find a new place to practice their tricks, as the grounds of the old Davis Elementary School on Maple Avenue have once again been gated.

As construction on Centennial’s new, yet to be named, Region 1 elementary school is set to begin as early as next week.

No dirt was turned at a ‘ground opening’ ceremony held late Friday Morning, however various officials gathered to hold shovels and announce that construction would be beginning soon.

Bids for the project are reported to have come in at slightly more than $3 million less the initial estimated cost of the project.

School Board President Andrew Pollock said even with the later than anticipated start of construction, the Region 1 elementary school building is still on schedule for a September 2012 opening.

He said possible names for the future Region 1 elementary school will be discussed at the next Centennial School Board Meeting.
