Fitting Home and School Into the Consolidation Process

Centennial School District's elementary schools are combining, but what does that mean for each of the former home and school organizations?

As Centennial School District's schools have begun to merge, per the district's elementary school consolidation plan, the home and school organizations have been forced to re-evaluate their rules to fit into the process.

There has been talk of making a uniform set of bylaws for all Centennial School District’s home and school organizations. But last night the Education Committee of the Centennial School Board said the decision is not up to the them.

“This is something we don’t feel we can do on the education committee,” said Education Committee Chairman Jane Schrader Lynch.

The committee made a unanimous motion to pass the issue along to the full school board.

But it doesn’t sound like the idea of having a standard set of bylaws is favorable.

Lynch said during the meeting that the organizations are for the parents and the board shouldn’t put a limit on what they can do.

Education Committee Member Cyndi Mueller said the most important thing  is that the home and school organizations are organized in a way that they are legally sound.

“The board wants to make sure no money is spent on solicitor fees,” she said. “It’s important to use the resources the district has for a smooth transition.”

Co-president of Willow Dale Elementary Home and School Organization Tracey Rahn went to the meeting to make sure her organization was represented.

“I think the next meeting will tell what’s going to happen,” she said. “They’ll probably say to take our bylaws to be looked over to be sure the legal verbage is covered."

The item is slated to be added to the agenda for the next meeting of the Centennial School Board, scheduled for Tuesday, June 28 at 7 p.m.
