Stackpole Holds Back to School Night

The elementary school held it's final Back to School Night Monday evening.

On Monday evening, hundreds of parents attended Back to School Night.

This year's event was the last for the 494-student school that is set to close it's doors in June. Next year, students from Stackpole will attend the new , which is under construction and expected to open in September 2012.

"Back to School Night is great! It gives parents a chance to meet their children's teachers," said Principal Kelley O'Leary.

Along with getting to meet their children's teachers, the evening allows parents to become acquainted with classroom curriculum.

"We had a lot of change last year, but this year will be much more cohesive," said O'Leary, who has been principal at Stackpole for two years.

"[Back to School Night] is great because [it] gives us the chance to experience what the kids do on daily basis," said parent Mike Senior, whose son Matthew just entered the second grade.

Teacher Mike Valeraro said, one of the most important aspects of Back to School Night is the chance to meet parents and encourage communication between parents and teachers.

"I came because I want to see her teacher and see what she is going to be learning," said Oksana Balibar, whose daughter just entered the school's kindergarten program.

Jean Rowland said she came out to learn more about homework procedures from her grand-daughter's first-grade teacher.

O'Leary, who will be the principal at Davis when it opens next fall, said for her it hasn't set in that last night was Stackpole's final Back to School Night.

"For me, the best part about Back to School Night is getting to know the parents," she said.
