4-H Pet Club Brings the Wild Things to Southampton Library

The 4-H Summer Pet Care Club helps Southampton Free Library youth patrons build better relationships with their animals and each other.

The annual 4-H Summer Pet Care Club will return to the Southampton Free Library from July 10 – Aug. 7.

According to Laura Terifay, the library’s children’s librarian, the library hosts the Pet Care Club, and has been a popular event among youth patrons, and designed specifically for children ages 8 – 12.  The summer Pet Care Club, run through the Penn State Cooperative Extension, offers participants an opportunity to learn how to care for a variety of pets and will interact with such animals at the library. Each week, participants will be encouraged to keep a project book and create a poster based off the lessons, which they may enter to showcase at the Middletown Grange Fair. In addition, participants may exhibit their pets in a local pet show.

  • Bucks County S.P.C.A
  • Eyes of the Wild, who will discuss exotic animals
  • 4-H Educator, who will discuss dogs
  • 4-H Cavy Club, who will discuss guinea pigs.

Terifay added that guest speakers may also bring in animals who work with special needs people, including seeing eye dogs.

She said that the 4-H Summer Pet Care Club is one of the several summer events of the library, which includes its “Dig Into Reading” series of programs for youth patrons.

“Everything is free, and that’s a nice plus,” Terifay said.
