Science in the Summer Program Returns to Library

Registration begins June 25 for students entering second through sixth grade who are interested in learning about human chromosomes and genes through a free program at the Southampton Free Library.

GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program will offer students an exciting look at the world of genetics at the this summer.

Science in the Summer is a hands-on course taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups: children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II).

The program consists of four 45-minute classes given over the course of one week (July 23- July 26). Students will have the opportunity to build a cell, extract DNA from a strawberry, examine their fingerprints and construct a DNA molecule.

There are both morning and afternoon sessions for each level

Morning: Level I: 10 - 10:45 a.m., Level II: 11:15 a.m. – Noon

Afternoon: Level I: 1:00 - 1:45 p.m., Level II: 2:15 - 3:00 p.m 

Parents must register in person at the library between June 25 – July 6. Students are then selected to participate through a lottery. The courses will run from July 23 to July 26.
