Southampton Seniors Celebrate Seuss at Stackpole

Volunteers from the Southampton Estates read to the children of Stackpole Elementary School on Wednesday as a part of national Read Across America Day.

In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, classroom and libraries all across the nation celebrated Read Across America Day.

At , residents of Southampton Estates joined  in celebrating this, the Wackiest of Wednesday's, by volunteering to read some Seuss selections aloud to the children.

Ten volunteers from the residential community spent the afternoon travelling to and from various classrooms in the school, reading to the children, many of whom were wearing their own version of a hat like the one in The Cat in the Hat.

"The residents just love this," said Lisa Syms, resident services director at Southampton Estates. "We put the sign up sheet out about a month ago and it was quickly filled."

Syms said she has run the program at other facilities in the past, but this is her first year at Southampton Estates and, therefore, it was the first time partnering with Stackpole.

She hopes to continue the partnership in the years to come, as she thinks it provides a worthwhile benefit to both the seniors and the children.

Read Across America Day honors Theodor Seuss Geisel, who was not a doctor at all, but rather a magazine cartoonist who penned and illustrated an extensive catalog of witty and entertaining children's books. Read more of Dr. Seuss' biogrography at his official website.
