Finance Committee Approves Staggered Bell Schedule

Willow Dale parents passionately voiced their concerns about the potential negative effects the later dismissal time would have on their after school lives.

Following a tense two-and-a-half hour discussion between school directors, administrators and parents, the Centennial Finance Committee approved 2-1 the originally proposed new bell schedule for the elementary schools. If the schedule passes through the full school board at its meeting tonight at 7 p.m., the following would take effect in September: Several factors forced the district to analyze the bus routes and come up with a plan that wold prevent elementary students from waiting up to 30 minutes after dismissal time for transportation home. The closing of three neighborhood schools, Leary, Longstreth and Stackpole, means that children that normally walked to school now needed bus service. The location of Willow Dale on a busy road and…

According to the agenda for Monday's Finance Committee meeting, members of the school board will review and discuss four options for revising the bell schedule for 2012-13. This discussion stems from a proposal realeased last month to change  the bell schedules at its elementary schools for the 2012-13 school year. That initial proposal was met with a large amount of opposition from parents and members of the community.  The discussion was tabled and was set to be reopened at an Operations Committee meeting on Monday, May 7; however, the district had not received the alternate plans in time and had to reschedule the discussion. Some other noteworthy items on Monday evening's finance committee meeting agenda: discussion of several …

When you make a decision as significant as consolidating schools, you need to look at all of the factors, not just those directly related to the physical school. Obviously this was not the case or a discussion of bell schedules and transportation would not be happening now. What other factors related to a school consolidation were not considered? WIth any project of this magnitude the school …   more ›

Bomb Threat at Tennent Determined Non-Credible

Police are questioning a person of interest related to the threat, and classes resumed on Monday with added police presence.

Warminster police combed the grounds of William Tennent Sunday night after an e-mail to school administrators indicated a bomb threat at the high school. No devices have been found, and investigators are questioning a person of interest. Police determined that the e-mail was a non-credible threat and school officials allowed classes to resume as scheduled Monday morning. "Rest assured that I would not have permitted faculty, staff, or students to enter the building if there were any reason for alarm," Centennial Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Cressman wrote in a statement. "The Warminster Police are to be commended for how quickly and decisively they acted upon being notified."

Crusaders for Child Internet Protection Law Speak to Local Parents

Alicia and Mary Kozakiewicz travel around the US and in Canada to talk about the Alicia Project in an effort to pass Alicia's Law to ensure children's safety online. They met with students and parents separately at Klinger Middle School on Tuesday.

A mother-daughter team spoke to parents at Klinger Middle School about the dangers of Internet predators Tuesday. Alicia Kozakiewicz was abducted near her Pittsburgh home 10 years ago. Her captor, a man she “met” online, took her to his home in Virginia where he abused and tortured her. After four days of captivity, she was rescued by the FBI. Now, Alicia and her mother, Mary, are on a quest to share their story in an effort to move parents and legislators to protect children from these Internet dangers and educate kids on what is out there. “No one had told us,” Mary said. “The Internet was still new. We need to fully understand that this is a phenomenon we didn’t grow up with, but it exists.” This “phenomenon” is brushed aside due to a …

Berdnik originally calculated the deficit at $4 million, but items such as the sale of Leary, Longstreth and Stackpole Elementary Schools, the elimination of 24 full time staff positions and minor spending cuts in every department have whittled the number down. The preliminary budget started at more than $100 million in expenditures and is now down to $98 million. The proposed budget also includes…
