This Was Southampton: Week of August 12, 1959

A look back at life in Southampton, more than a half century ago.

  The following information was obtained from The Southampton Star, week of August 12, 1959  The Violet Tennis Club Held it's 59th Annual Picnic at the Conestoga Rod and Gun Club. Of the 47 members in attendance, 15 had been members for at least 55 years. In recounting the history of the club, The Star reported that a group of young men and women who were mostly unmarried, and had attended grade school together on Street Road in Southampton and then entered the new two-year high school on Street Road when it was built in 1898. According to The Star, the girls and many of the men had jobs in the city by 1900 and commuted on the Reading. The rest of the young men worked on their father's farms.  They wanted to get together regularly for a …

Don't miss out on the final day of the Southampton Days Country Fair.

  Today brings the last day of the 41st annual Southampton Days Country Fair. If last night's hot dog eating contest wasn't your thing, maybe you will enjoy tonight's gastronomic battle - the pie eating contest. Besides all of the usual carnival fun, here's a list of what is on the schedule for the fair this evening: Admission to the fair is free. Parking for the fair is available for $2 per car at Klinger Middle School, with proceeds benefitting Southampton Girls Softball. The fair will run from 6 until 11 p.m.

Thought the Fourth of July fun was over? Not just yet! The Southampton Days Country Fair continues through Saturday. Thursday night is family night at the 41st annual Southampton Days Country Fair. Many businesses and local organizations will have tables set up around the fair at Tamanend Park ballfield beginning at 6 p.m. Besides all of the usual fun, the fair's 3rd Annual Talent Show will be held this evening from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. Admission to the fair is free. From 7 to 10 p.m. tonight, you can ride all the carnival rides you can handle for $20 per person Parking for the fair is available for $2 per car at Klinger Middle School, with proceeds benefitting Southampton Girls Softball. Southampton Fireworks Schedule and Information

Celebrate the Fourth of July Southampton style at the Southampton Days Country Fair and fireworks!

  Fourth of July is Southampton Day - a full-on Independence Day celebration in Southampton. The 41st annual Southampton Days Country Fair continues at Tamanend Park.   The fair reopens at the ball fields at 6 p.m. There is a $3 admission fee for those over the age of 3. This fee includes entry to the fair, the two concerts and the annual fireworks spectacular. The fireworks are set to begin at 9:30 p.m. at the football fields behind Klinger Middle School.  NOTE: Beginning at 7 p.m., Second Street Pike will be closed (except for buses) between Street Road and Bristol Road. Southampton Days are Here Again!

Southampton’s annual week-long country fair kicks off Monday.

The 41st annual Southampton Days Country Fair begins at Tamanend Park on Monday, July 2.   This year’s celebration, themed “Our Legacy, Past and Present,” will feature all of the usual staples and a few new attractions. Attendees have their choice of bingo, children’s activities, concerts, carnival rides and more beginning 6 p.m. each night from Monday through Saturday. Wednesday, July 4 is Southampton Day – a full-on Independence Day celebration - beginning with a parade at 8:30 in the morning and ending late in the evening, after the legendary fireworks bonanza.  (The fairgrounds will be closed between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. in preparation for the fireworks.) You can stroll around the carnival grounds for free each night, except for Wednesday…
