Another Sandy Casualty: Cell Networks

The Federal Communications Commission said 25 percent of the cell towers in the Northeast were disabled in the wake of the storm.

  If it seemed on Tuesday and Wednesday like your smartphone was having unusual trouble making calls or downloading web pages, it probably wasn't your imagination. In addition to the billions of dollars in property damage its estimated to have caused in the Northeast, Hurricane Sandy also did a number on the region's mobile networks. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) told Reuters that a quarter of the cellular towers in the Northeast were out of commission following the storm. AT&T Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile all reported service disruptions. According to Reuters, Verizon may have suffered some of the worst damage from the storm. Four Cell Phone Towers to be Installed in Township

One tower has already been installed, three more will soon follow. Officials say the new towers will increase cellular service throughout the community.

"Can you hear me now?" may be asked less often once four new cell phone poles are installed in the township. The first of the four towers, which will help increase cellular service in Upper Southampton and nearby communities, has been installed at 1249 Dennis Rd. by the American Tower Corporation, the same company updating and installing towers in Northampton. "American Tower is a leading independent owner and operator of wireless and broadcast communication sites," according to the company's website. Township Manager Joe Golden said that the application for the towers was submitted at the same time as the application for Northampton. I have a question. Why is it as homeowners we have to ask the township for permits to build anything, or add to our homes, yet they can put up cell towers or whatever you want to call them, without prior notice? If they had put zoning notice up, I am sure residents would have taken notice. Is there anything we can do to stop the other three from going up,now that we know their location?   more ›
