Exhaust from Generator Sparks 'Relatively Minor' Fire

The Churchville Lane blaze began in the shed of a two-story single family home and spread to the attic.

A Northampton man was forced to find a temporary residence after a fire that started in his shed spread to the attic of his Churchville Lane home, making it uninhabitable.  Northampton Fire Marshal Frank Fenton said the blaze, which started at 7:04 p.m. Saturday was under control within 20 minutes. He said the homeowner was forced to vacate, at least for the time being, because the residence was without electric and the fire had damaged circuits.  Fenton said that PECO had disconnected the electric to three homes - including the site of the fire - an hour prior to the fire starting. The cause of the fire, Fenton said, was the "hot exhaust from the generator coming into contact with combustible material" in the man's shed, where the …

Clean-Up at Churchville Nature Center

Volunteers helped to clean up Churchville Nature Center, its trails, and the surrounding reservoir on Saturday as part of International Coastal Clean-Up Day.

Volunteers gathered at the Churchville Nature Center for International Coastal Clean-Up Day on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

More than 70 volunteers gathered at Churchville Nature Center as part of the International Coastal Clean-Up Day on Saturday, Sept. 17. From 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., the 73 volunteers cleaned up 433 pounds of trash, according to Diane Sears, president of the Churchville Nature Center.

International Coastal Clean-Up Day Takes Over Southampton

On Saturday, Sept. 17, Tamanend Park and the Churchville Nature Center join efforts for a belated Earth Day clean-up.

Tamanend Park and the Churchville Nature Center will both host separate clean-up events as part of the 26th Annual International Coastal Cleanup. Starting at 10 a.m. through 1 p.m., the community is invited to join the Friends of Tamanend and the Park and Recreation department to clean-up the park. Volunteers can also clean up the grounds around the reservoir near the Churchville Nature Center. All of the debris collected will be weighed, and information will be sent to the Pennsylvania Clean Ways Committee, which will then add the information to the International Coastal Clean-Up data. Be sure to wear long sleeves, pants and sneakers so you're prepared for the day's activities. Gloves and trashbags will be provided, so all you need to do …

Native Americans Dance in the New Year

Churchville Nature Center hosts Lenape dance workshops.

Many New Year traditions center around superstitions to bring on good luck. The Lenape Indians, who first settled the Delaware River Valley, have no need for such practices intended to bring only good for the coming year. According to Churchville Nature Center's Director for Lenape Indian Village Marge Custer, the Lenape are thankful for the good and the bad in life. "The bad things that come to you in life's journey teach you and make you stronger," Custer explains. The center will host its first indoor Native American Dance Workshop Saturday, Jan. 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. Another indoor workshop will be held Feb. 5.
