The mad rush to the end of the school year is about to begin.
When the kids said the PSSA exams were coming, the only appropriate reaction was dread. Not because of the tests, but because of what that signaled -- the beginning of the Spring Frenzy and the looming mad rush to the end of the school year. As we transition out of a mild winter, everything begins to accelerate. Baseball and softball seasons begin, which means evenings and weekend wrapped up in practices and games. Every musical ensemble presses for more time in preparation for the year-ending concerts and there are spring field trips to consider. With an eighth grader in the house, there are also plans to be made for the middle school finale. All of these create a giant jumbled mess on the calendar and try as we might to control it, we …

The Southampton Railroad Station Society looks for ways to raise money to fund its restoration efforts for the local train station building.
The Southampton Railroad Station Society continues to make efforts to refurbish the local historical train station building. The Society has experienced a slow start to the work that needs to be done, however the group stabilized the building to prevent further deterioration. Board Member, Jon Frey is currently working to refurbish the platform lights. The Society is getting electrical service put back into the station, a piece of the overall project that is slated to be finished by Thanksgiving. They replaced the main door and will continue to fix the structure as funds will allow. Frey, who wants the community to know and see that work is being done, said the current main focus is raising money to aid in the restoration. “Right now we’re…

The Southampton Railroad Station Society members and Board of Directors hope to get their name out to the public by attending and hosting events throughout the year.
Members of the Southampton Railroad Station Society's Board of Directors detailed several upcoming events at a general membership meeting at the Upper Southampton Township Building last week. The first event, which will take place on Sept. 10, is a showing at the Bristol Model Club event at Tamanend Park at 10 am. “It’s a big train display,” said Board Member Charlie Liberto. “It’s going to cover the whole inside of the carriage house.” Liberto said The Model Club will run all sorts of trains as people walk around the display. Next, the Society plans to mark the 90th anniversary of the Bryn Athyn train wreck. This tragedy occurred Dec. 5, 1921 when two, wooden passenger trains collided along the Reading Railroad. Twenty-seven people died…

In celebration of National Poetry Month, a group of fourth-grade students will hold a poetry reading at the end of April.
On Thursday, April 28th, Stephanie Badulak and her fourth grade class will descend upon the Southampton Starbucks to host their annual poetry reading. April is National Poetry Month after all and Badulak feels the event is the perfect way to honor it – as well as celebrate all the things the class has learned about poetry over the course of the year. “The kids have written several poems throughout the year,” said Badulak. “We did limericks, haikus, and something I call simile poems. We learn about rhyme, rhythm, and all those things.” Each student that participates in the event will be reading two poems – one written by themselves and another by a favorite, published poet. It’s a great way for a ten-year-old to dip his or her feet …
