High School Students Get Dose of Financial Reality

A workshop hosted at William Tennent walked students through the process of creating their own budgets.

When John Thomas walked into William Tennent High School Wednesday morning, he felt pretty confident about his choice of mechanical engineering as a career. When the Neshaminy senior left Tennent a few hours later, he was more certain than ever that he made the right decision. His participation in the REAL Solutions Financial Reality Fair gave Thomas a dry run of what to expect when he graduates college and enters the workforce. The workshop showed Thomas that his lifelong philosophy of save, save, save has served him well. "I've been saving since I was born," said Thomas. "It's how I bought my jeep. The fair gives you the option to save between 3 and 6 percent, but I boosted it up to 10 percent and still managed to have a good life …

What a great event. It should be a class that all students need to take prior to graduating.   more ›

Centennial Teachers and District Strike a Deal

Centennial School District has extended a tentative contract offer to its teachers and it appears the teachers like what they see. Now, the question is will the remaining members of the Centennial School Board vote to adopt the agreement Tuesday evening.

For the past ten months, Centennial School District teachers have been working without a contract. However, that could come to an end Tuesday evening if the school board votes to approve an offer extended to the teachers by the district’s negotiating team. Several teachers have confirmed that a vote was taken Monday as to the terms of the deal, and School Board President Andrew Pollock said that vote was in favor of accepting the new contract. Pollock said he could not speak directly to the terms of the proposed contract, but did confirm it is a four-year deal that will carry the district though June 2014. He said the deal also includes a salary freeze for the first year. According to Pollock, if approved by the board, this new contract …

Centennial Searches for $1.7 Million

The district’s 2011-12 budget remains unbalanced; administrators seek public input for ways to remedy the situation without cutting programs or grossly increasing taxes.

With the state’s deadline for budget submission quickly approaching, the Finance Committee of the Centennial School Board has called a special meeting to discuss the options for making the numbers work. When the initial draft of the district’s 2011-12 budget was unveiled back in December, administrators were proposing a substantial tax hike, approximately 7 mills, in an attempt to balance a rather large deficit. This initial proposal was drafted in hopes of a favorable consideration regarding funding from the state. But this favorable outlook for funding did not materialize, and board members have said the proposal by Governor Corbett stands to move approximately 2.1 million in revenues away from the district’s 2011-2012 budget. Currently…

Ask Luci

What Should We Do with Our Savings?

Luci talks to a reader about planning for their financial future.

Dear Luci, The hubby and I have been talking about finances, investing, etc. We each have 401ks for retirement, and a several month "safety net" for now, but it's a daunting task to start deciding what to do with savings. Should we try on our own? Put in back into fixing up the house? Interview financial advisors? We're not sure where to start. Sincerely, Saving in Southampton Dear Saving, No matter how much they make, most of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. Yet you and your husband have somehow managed to get ahead. Nice work! Now let me say this. I am not a financial expert.  However, I will gladly share what I have learned from the so called “wealthy folks,” and my favorite financial guru, Dave Ramsey. Before you start any …
