A Rainy Week, But Not Terribly Cold

A December to forget for snow lovers continues with a generally rainy and mild week of weather ahead.

The coming week will be mild, snowless and with a few shots of rainfall. There are no signs of Arctic-like cold on the horizon but the weekend will be colder than what we'll experience for much of the week. A stormier pattern will rule the roost overall but with the jet stream generally pushing storm systems through at a quick pace, these storms won't have time to organize, strengthen or set up a more favorable pattern for snow lovers in their wake.   The coldest air is currently locked over Northwest Canada and Alaska and is likely to stay there for rest of December, although occasional glances of colder air will push down. This weekend will be one of those glances. Rain is possible later Monday into early Tuesday with the next of these …

Weather Service Issues Flash Flood Watch

Heavy, slow moving pockets of rainfall could produce flooding of small streams and poor drainage areas.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly issued a flash flood watch this morning for the Philadelphia area including Bucks and Montgomery counties. According to the weather service, tropical rains threaten to produce pockets of flash flooding at times into Wednesday evening. General rainfall of 2-4 inches is expected through Wednesday in the I-95 corridor from near Trenton through the Philadelphia metro area into northern Delaware. The primary flood threat is for small streams and poor drainage areas. Bands of heavy showers with embedded thunderstorms can easily produce 1-2 inches of rain in an hour’s time. If a band of heavy showers lingers, excessive rainfall would result in flooding. Here’s a look at the NWS forecast for Southampton:

Damp Start Turns Into a Fine Week

Outside of a wet start to Monday, most of the week ahead should feature rather nice weather.

We've had a rainy run the past couple of weeks– Philadelphia has picked up over four inches of rain since Aug. 1.  Monday's rainy start is associated with a disturbance that is riding along the cool front that pushed through the region on Friday night and Saturday.Once this gets out of the way later in the morning hours, Monday afternoon should wind up nice. The other potential chance of rain in the work week is on Wednesday, with a weak trough that will pass through the region and up the coast. It could trigger a few passing showers as it moves through. Outside of Wednesday, the next chance of showers may not be until next Sunday or Monday with the approach of a cool front from the northwest. Temperatures this week will generally reside …

The flood watch is in effect until late tonight. In addition, an excessive heat warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. According to the weather service, summerlike conditions with an approaching cold front will produce several bands of very heavy rain, mainly between 5 p.m. and midnight. Some areas received 2-6 inches of rain this past weekend. An additional downpourcould result in flash flooding.  The forecast calls for heat index values in the upper 90s due to temperatures in the lower 90s. The heat indices today will probably run 2 to 4 degrees warmer than yesterday’s maximums, which will probably occur …
