Tennent Soccer Kicks Back with Special Olympics

The Bucks County Special Olympic Soccer Team challenged the Panthers in the annual Partners in Soccer game last night at the high school stadium.

After squeaking past Council Rock South Monday night and playoff hopes resting on this afternoon's final conference game against Harry Truman High School, it would have been reasonable to expect the players on William Tennent's varsity soccer team to take Tuesday night off. However, there was no way they were going to miss last night's benefit game against the Bucks County Special Olympic Soccer Team, an annual event to which every player looks forward. "This is their time, attendance is on a volunteer basis, and they are all here tonight," said Sandy Haslett, one of the parent organizers for the game. "It's an end of the season tradition and they always have a ball." The enjoyment of the event came from both sides of the field. The Bucks …

Planners Approve Relaxed Setback for Fencing

The township’s board of supervisors will now consider adopting the ordinance, which will relax the setback for some fencing from 50 to 40 feet.

The Upper Southampton Township Planning Commission agreed with plans to relax the current limits on distance from the roadway for fencing on township property. At their meeting Monday evening, the commission considered an ordinance that would relax the current setback requirements 10 feet for placement of fences, backstops and poles on parks and public recreation facilities.  The ordinance currently on the books in Southampton stipulates that these structures must be placed a minimum of 50 feet from the center of the roadway. The new ordinance would allow for these structures, when built on public parkland, to be just 40 feet from the right of way.  If this new ordinance is adopted by the board of supervisors, it will allow the township …

The Vikings squeaked out a 3-2 victory over Little Flower Thursday night, earning a berth in the PIAA District 12 Class AAA playoffs.

Southampton Soccer Team Finishes Strong in Weekend Tourney

Southampton Thunder U-11 Boys Traveling Soccer Team took second place, following an intense championship game in the Whitewater Cup Classic Soccer Tournament this weekend.

Members of the Southampton Thunder Under 11 Soccer Team traveled to Luzerne County Park this weekend to take part in the Whitewater Cup Classic Soccer Tournament. Assistant Coach Todd Hanefeld said following two early wins on Saturday morning, the team advanced to the championship game against tournament host, the Cantolao Strikers of Wilkes Barre. Hanefeld said in a championship match late Saturday his team took an early 2 - 0 lead, but by the end of the game the Strikers had come back and tied the score. Following two five-minute overtime periods, the score remained tied and both teams scored one additional point during a five-man shoot out, leaving the game undecided.  “Unfortunately, the sixth man on the other team made the shot and …

Board OKs $1.1 Million Contract for Soccer Fields

But, in total, the Veterans Field project will cost more than originally planned.

Township leaders will spend $1.1 million for two soccer fields and parking for about 100 vehicles at Veterans Park on Street Road. But, after action Wednesday night, they may be hard-pressed to get the entire project under budget. The Board of Supervisors approved a $1,131,154 contract with S & H Landscaping, of Chalfont, for the fields, lights and parking area. Township Engineer Wayne Kiefer said that bid was the lowest of seven, with the highest being close to $1.5 million. Supervisor Chairwoman Lola Biuckians said she and her colleagues were thrown a “curveball” when they recently learned the bids sought did not cover the entire Veterans Field project and asked Kiefer to explain. The engineer said township staff decided to seek separate…
