While many say simple reheating is all that’s necessary to have a “day after” feast, others have elaborate recipes for turning Thanksgiving leftovers into gourmet delights. From savory turkey soups to sinfully delicious pot pies and mile-high sandwiches, everyone has their own ideas on what to do with what’s leftover. The Food Network even has an entire recipe collection dedicated to the topic. Thanksgiving by the Numbers: Fun Facts About Turkey Day

Here are a few fun facts about Thanksgiving.

In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims, early settlers of Plymouth Colony, held a three-day feast to celebrate a bountiful harvest, an event many regard as the nation’s first Thanksgiving. Historians have also recorded ceremonies of thanks among other groups of European settlers in North America, including British colonists in Virginia in 1619. The legacy of thanks and the feast have survived the centuries, as the event became a national holiday in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving. Later, President Franklin Roosevelt clarified that Thanksgiving should always be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month to encourage earlier holiday shopping, never on the …

Police Announce Roving DUI Patrols for Thanksgiving Holiday

Officers will be conducting roving DUI patrols, as well as checks for agressive drivers and equipment violations.

The Upper Southampton Township Police Department will be conducting roving D.U.I. patrols between the hours of 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 21.   The patrols will take place on various roadways within the township, notably those that have had a high rate of D.U.I. related traffic arrests and D.U.I. crashes. A Quiet Thanksgiving Before a Stormy End to November

Thanksgiving's weather is expected to be dry and quiet as we continue our peaceful weather pattern around the region.

The weather over the next week is expected to continue the quiet trend established about ten days ago. While temperatures have bounced around between mild and chilled, the weather has been dry and tranquil daily. That will continue, although this week will feature a moderate trend in temperatures each afternoon. Thanksgiving and Black Friday should be particularly nice, with Thanksgiving probably a bit sunnier and Black Friday a bit milder of the two respective days. Afternoon highs each day could flirt with or exceed 60 degrees. Enjoy! A cold shot is lurking for the end of the Thanksgiving weekend and could linger into early next week. The chill will be nothing brutal, but highs may return to the 40s for Sunday and Monday of next week. …

The Brunette Lucy

Can You Have Too Many Turkeys?

Lucy's Matt doesn't think there is such a thing as too many Thanksgiving turkeys.

To me, Thanksgiving is the harbinger of the Christmas season, and I look forward to putting up the tree that weekend. For Matt, however, it marks his favorite day of the year because he loves turkey. He looks forward to the big dinner and all the leftover turkey sandwiches, turkey casseroles, turkey stir fry, you name it. He loves turkey more than Santa loves his elves. So one year, we were out and he wanted to stop in at one of those discount food stores. We don’t have one in our town and Matt likes to shop there whenever he can because second only to turkey, he loves bargains. When we got to the meat aisle, we saw that they had Jennie-O turkeys on sale for 38 cents a pound. I glanced over and saw Matt’s eyes glaze over. He was thrilled; …

Thanksgiving Recipes: How to Cook Stuffing and Other Favorite Side Dishes

A turkey can't just sit alone on the table. Here are some recipes for Thanksgiving's most popular side dishes.

What would a turkey be on Thanksgiving without its faithful side companions? Often more popular than the turkey itself, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and other favorites are staples of the food coma-inducing meal. Try one of the recipes below to bring a new taste to your Thanksgiving feast. Roasted Winter Squash Gauge the amount of squash you’ll need by allowing 1 small squash (acorn and butternut are good choices) for every four people. Cut each squash in half lengthwise and remove seeds. Brush sides and inner cavity with olive oil and place flesh-side down on a lightly-oiled baking sheet. Roast for approximately 45 minutes or until flesh is very soft and easy pulls away from the skin. After removing squash from oven, let …

OLGC 12th Annual Turkey Drive

Our Lady of Good Counsel's youth program will be collecting and distributing food to area families in need.

This Thanksgiving season, Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish is trying to help local families that are in need. The church's youth program will be collecting food as part of its 12th Annual Turkey Drive and distributing them to needy families. Organizers have requested donations of frozen turkeys, vegetables, canned goods, stuffing, desserts, and all the fixings needed for a holiday dinner. If you are donating a turkey, the volunteers ask that you double bag it – place it in two plastic shopping bags. Those who wish to donate can drop their contribution off in the parking lot of the Citizens Bank in the Davisville Shopping Center Sunday between noon and 1 p.m. Monetary donations will also accepted and greatly appreciated.  Please contact …
