Supervisors want to hear what residents think should be priority number one to fix in our town.
The Upper Southampton Township Board of Supervisors has set aside $50,000 in this year's budget to begin implementing the township's comprehensive plan. The only problem is the board is unsure just where to start. The nearly 200-page plan is filled with suggestions for improving life in Southampton, ranging from those as simple as seeking additional grant money to support the library to tackling much more complex issues such as alleviating the traffic congestion in the center of town. Earlier this summer, the board decided to turn the task of prioritizing the action list over to those that it would affect the most: the residents of Southampton. "We want to hear from anyone who has concerns or ideas," said Board of Supervisors Chairman …

Effective May 1, trash, recycling, and bulk waste collection is on Fridays; yard waste collection is on Mondays. Switching to once a week trash collection was done for two primary purposes: reduce the trash fee and to encourage recycling. The trash fee was reduced from $345 per year to $310 per effective this year, and the fee is expected to remain at that rate for four years. This is suprising considering trash collection is labor and vehicle/gas consumption intensive. Last year, the Township switched to single stream recycling and expanded the types of materials which can be recycled. I refer you to the township website and the brochure delivered to each resident for a list of materials to recycle. The list expands from time to time. For…

Upper Southampton Patch grants a one-time reprieve for talking trash on the site.
Trash collection in the township changed to Fridays only, effective May 1. However, it appears several people in township still put their trash out on the curb this morning. A drive through the township Tuesday afternoon showed 4 out of 5 homes had both trash and recyclables in front of their home. So you tell us... did you put your trash out today? The construction of the new Region 1 elementary school is currently running weeks behind schedule and questions loom as to whether the district will be able to deliver on their promise of a Sept. 2012 opening.
Construction at the Region 1 elementary school site on Maple Avenue has resumed and at a feverish pace, as the district needs to make up for several weeks of lost time. Earlier this month, district administrators said the Region 1 elementary school building project was thrown nearly 6 weeks off of its already tight time line by Upper Southampton Township. Township officials said the district is simply laying the groundwork for deflecting the blame when they can’t deliver on their promise to open the school in September 2012. At the Centennial School Board’s August Operations Committee Meeting, Assistant Superintendent of Operations William Gretton said the district submitted plans for approval to the township in a timely fashion, but …

With doubled revenues from increased recycling in Upper Southampton Township, residents could be looking at reduced trash pickup rates in the future.
An increase in recycling in Upper Southampton Township could lead to a reduction of the cost of residents’ garbage removal services. Last April, the township made the switch from commingled recycling to single-stream recycling. Single-stream allows for residents to toss all kinds of recyclables into the same bin as well as recycle a wider variety of materials. Single-stream recycling typically goes over well in communities—such as Southampton—that are new to the practice, said Frank Sau, Director of Communications for J.P. Mascaro & Sons. “Single stream or one source, is no sorting whatsoever by the homeowner or by the business or whatever,” said Sau. “Whenever we implement this into a community, the recycling rates usually do go up.” Sau …
