By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — One of the world’s largest generic drug manufacturers, known for its morning-after pill, has given hundreds of thousands in campaign funds to Pennsylvania politicians. Teva Pharmaceuticals captured headlines this fall, when its Plan B One-Step was offered for free to high school students along with contraception and health-care services through a New York City program. Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, the company’s political action committee, spent more on campaign dollars this year than in the past. Donations totaled more than $275,000, compared with around $138,000 in 2010 and $47,000 in 2008, according to election money tracker OpenSecrets.org. In 2012, the PAC gave: In the U.S. Senate, …

State Rep. Bernie O'Neill earned almost 60 percent of the vote to defeat challenger Brian Munroe.
State Representative Bernie O'Neill took a commanding lead when initial voting results came in Tuesday night and never looked back as he defeated Democratic challenger Brian Munroe and retained his seat in the 29th district. As of 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, O'Neill held a 58 to 42 percent margin over Munroe with 30 of 31 districts reporting. O'Neill took the victory as a stamp of approval by the voters for his performance in the state legislature and a disapproval of what he felt was an extremely negative campaign by his opponent. "I like to run a positive and clean campaign," said O'Neill as he shook hands with fellow Warminster Republicans as they gathered to watch election results at the VFW. "He did nothing but trash me, and people …

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice presidential running mate, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges from …

Some voters who reside in Upper Southampton's North 3 voting district were forced to wait a little longer than this morning to cast their ballots, after one of the two voting machines at their polling place malfunctioned.
A voting machine malfunctioned soon after the polls opened Tuesday morning at Davis Elementary School. “There was just a glitch,” said Kevin Kennedy, the judge of elections at the polling location. “Someone pressed the wrong button and the machine locked up.” The problem occurred with a machine recording votes for the North 3 district. That region is comprised of voters residing in the northwest portion of Upper Southampton, bordering of both Northampton and Warminster Townships. Kennedy said a representative from the Bucks County Board of Elections was called in to resolve the problem, and the machine was back in service within an hour. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, makes a campaign stop in Wescosville Monday to drum up support for the Obama-Biden ticket in the final weeks of the campaign.
Laura J. Marie has been so frustrated with friends and family who do not support the Obama-Biden ticket that she went online a few days ago to offer to help the president's re-election campaign. "And I was invited here today," she said as she stood among the 100 or so supporters who came to hear Jill Biden speak Monday at the Pennsylvania State Education Association office in Wescosville. "I only wish I did it sooner." Marie, who said she voted for Obama in 2008, was clearly among like-minded individuals as she waited for Jill Biden to approach the podium. Some, like Allentown resident and retired Salisbury High School art teacher Dolly Yanolko, were quite emphatic in their support for the president. “Any teacher who doesn’t vote for a …

A judge ruled today that Pennsylvania's tough new Voter ID Law should be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election, according to an Associated Press report. The ruling can be appealed to the state Supreme Court, which said it would expedite any further action in the case since Election Day is just five weeks away. Do you agree with the ruling? Tell us in the comments section below. Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson heard two days of testimony last week, as directed by the Supreme Court, to determine whether the state has made it easy enough to get a photo ID in order to vote.
