Veterans' Field Playground Nears Completion

Crews have been working to finish the playground and construction is expected to be completed by Monday.

The completion of the playground at Veterans' Field rounds out the $1M renevation project at the Street Road Complex. Crews have been working to finish the playground and construction is expected to be completed by Monday.  The fence around the field has been installed and the snack stand is open. In fact, the only item left on the punch list for the project is the relocation of the Veterans' Memorial from the corner of Street Road and Second Street Pike to its new home at the field.  Township supervisors voted Tuesday to hold an informal ribbon-cutting ceremony on Veterans' Day (Sunday, Nov. 11) with a larger, more formal ceremony to follow on Memorial Day 2013. The total cost of the playground is approximately $47,000.

POLL: How Important is Grammar?

Township supervisors are concerned with grammar and syntax - are you?

Township Supervisors recently sent an ordinance back to the drawing board over the omission of two commas. The thinking was the ordinance could have been interpreted to grant a much wider exception than was intended, simply by not offsetting a key phrase. Read: Two Commas Hold Up Fence at Veterans Field You tell us - Big government at work, or a necessary step to protect the interests of the township. What do you think? Two Commas Hold Up Fence at Veterans Field

Supervisors will re-advertise an ordinance after a question of semantics arose at a public hearing Tuesday evening.

The Upper Southampton Board of Supervisors had planned to adopt an ordinance granting relief from a township zoning regulation for public recreational property Tuesday evening. The revised ordinance would have allowed for the construction of a fence around the township's new $1M soccer fields on Street Road. But the omission of two commas, to offset a key phrase in the ordinance, could have arguably granted a much wider exception than what was originally intended by the board. The oversight was noted by supervisors at a public hearing during the board's Tuesday evening meeting. The verbiage in question currently reads as follows: An ordinance of the Board of Supervisors of Upper Southampton Township... amending the Upper Southampton …

Planners Approve Relaxed Setback for Fencing

The township’s board of supervisors will now consider adopting the ordinance, which will relax the setback for some fencing from 50 to 40 feet.

The Upper Southampton Township Planning Commission agreed with plans to relax the current limits on distance from the roadway for fencing on township property. At their meeting Monday evening, the commission considered an ordinance that would relax the current setback requirements 10 feet for placement of fences, backstops and poles on parks and public recreation facilities.  The ordinance currently on the books in Southampton stipulates that these structures must be placed a minimum of 50 feet from the center of the roadway. The new ordinance would allow for these structures, when built on public parkland, to be just 40 feet from the right of way.  If this new ordinance is adopted by the board of supervisors, it will allow the township …

Rich Soil Helps Reduce Cost of Veterans Field Renovation

The million-dollar renovation of Veterans Field on Street Road will come in at a slightly lower cost to the township, due to some unanticipated savings.

The township has gotten a little good news in its quest to limit spending on the newly named Veterans Field. The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a change order reducing the cost of a $1.13 million contract for two soccer fields, lights and a parking area by $21,529. Township Manager Joe Golden explained the reductions were due in large part to about $16,000 that is no longer needed for the screening of topsoil, because the soil is in good shape. Golden pointed out that it's rare for contractor's change order to call for less money to be spent. The township has budgeted close to $1.27 million for the entire project, with $794,900 coming from general funds and $470,982 from open space funds. In May, the supervisors approved a $1,131…
