Police: Drunk Driving Caused Deadly Street Road Motorcycle Crash

Police said John Edel, the operator of the motorcycle, had a blood alcohol level 2.5 times the legal limit at the time of the accident.

The Upper Southampton Police Department issued the following statement Friday afternoon:

The Upper Southampton Township Police Department has concluded its investigation into traffic accident which occurred on June 30, 2012 at the intersection of Street Road and Knowles Avenue which claimed the lives of motorcycle operator John Edel and his passenger Ellen Kelly.

The accident investigation revealed that John Edel disregarded a steady red traffic signal located at the intersection of Knowles Avenue while traveling on Eastbound Street Road.

Witness interviews provided information that Edel entered the intersection at least two seconds after the traffic signal had changed to red.

Furthermore, Edel had a blood alcohol content of 0.205% which is 2 ½ times the legal limit in Pennsylvania while operating the motorcycle.

Our condolences are with the Edel and Kelly families for the loss of their loved ones.

The Department would like to thank all of the witnesses that had come forward to assist in the investigation.

My sincere condolences are with the Kelly's and the Edels. Things in this crazy world, at times, make NO sense to us. My words aren't enough to help. I firmly believe most people are good yet bad things happen to all in life. Control what you can, but reach out for support when you feel the need. There are many in this community who would gladly help. May God bless us all.

What about the car? If john ran the red light then that means the car ran the red light as well not including failure to yeild to oncoming traffic...
