Southampton Soccer Team Finishes Strong in Weekend Tourney

Southampton Thunder U-11 Boys Traveling Soccer Team took second place, following an intense championship game in the Whitewater Cup Classic Soccer Tournament this weekend.

Members of the Southampton Thunder Under 11 Soccer Team traveled to Luzerne County Park this weekend to take part in the Whitewater Cup Classic Soccer Tournament.

Assistant Coach Todd Hanefeld said following two early wins on Saturday morning, the team advanced to the championship game against tournament host, the Cantolao Strikers of Wilkes Barre.

Hanefeld said in a championship match late Saturday his team took an early 2 - 0 lead, but by the end of the game the Strikers had come back and tied the score.

Following two five-minute overtime periods, the score remained tied and both teams scored one additional point during a five-man shoot out, leaving the game undecided. 

“Unfortunately, the sixth man on the other team made the shot and ours didn’t,” he said. “Our team fought really hard, right up until the very end. They did themselves and their parents proud.”

The season for the Southampton Thunder U-11 travel team has only just begun, and with a record of 1-1-1 the team looks forward to playing their next home game at the fields by on Sunday morning.
